Mandate cameras in all Medicaid‑approved care centers
Mandate cameras in all Medicaid‑approved care centers
The Issue
The safety and welfare of our most vulnerable populations, including children and adults residing in Medicaid-approved care centers, must be a top priority. There have been alarming cases where abuse and neglect have gone unnoticed or unreported due to lack of evidence. It's time we take decisive steps to change that.
Installing cameras in these facilities will act as a crucial safeguard. Not only will it deter potential misconduct by providing oversight, but it will also ensure accountability for the actions of care providers. Numerous studies have shown that surveillance can significantly reduce incidents of abuse and neglect. In one particular case in Ohio, the presence of cameras led to a 30% decrease in reported incidents over just one year.
Moreover, these recordings can serve as indispensable evidence in legal situations, giving a voice to those who might otherwise be unheard. Families will also gain peace of mind knowing their loved ones are in a secure environment.
We understand the potential concerns regarding privacy, but the installation of cameras can be done in a manner that protects individual dignity while prioritizing safety. Specific areas, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, can remain camera-free zones, while communal areas and treatment rooms are monitored.
We urge Medicaid, state health departments, and lawmakers to enact legislation mandating the use of surveillance cameras in all approved care centers. By doing so, we can take a significant step forward in protecting those who cannot protect themselves
