Reform Los Angeles City Government!

The Issue

The recent arrests of two Los Angeles City Council members on federal corruption charges isn't simply a case of "bad apples" abusing their positions. The system in which deep-pocketed interests have undue influence over decisions on development and other issues is crying out for reform.  It is time for radical changes in ordinances governing lobbying and campaign finance to put an end to a "pay to play" culture and to level the playing field for all citizens in Los Angeles.  We don't need the appointment of commissions to produce yet another study that will gather dust on a shelf.  We need to ban campaign contributions from those with business before the City Council.  We need to end the practice of "behested" donations.  We need much greater transparency in lobbying reports, and we need to end the practice of city employees moving into lucrative jobs with developers and others wanting to curry favor with the very offices that employed those people.  We need strict disclosure of "ex-parte" communications, so that we know who our elected officials have been discussing city business with.  And this is only a partial list--there are many more reforms that can make our city less corrupt and fairer for all its citizens.
