Congress: KEEP CHINESE CHICKEN OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS AND SUPERMARKETS!

Over the summer, we were alarmed to learn that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will allow four Chinese facilities to process poultry raised and slaughtered in the United States, Canada, or Chile, then export the cooked poultry products back into the United States for human consumption. China has an unusually troubling record when it comes to food safety. Specific instances include: dangerously high levels of mercury found in Chinese baby formula; more than 16,000 diseased pig carcasses dumped in a river to rot; more than $1 million worth of rat and other small mammal meat sold to Chinese consumers as lamb; and more than 300,000 Chinese children sickened, with several dying, from melamine-tainted milk powder. Last year, according to news reports, a Chinese poultry supplier provided Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in China with chicken fattened by large quantities of illegal drugs. And in the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned pet owners not to feed their pets jerky treats from China. Since 2007, approximately 600 dogs and cats in the United States have mysteriously died, and 3,600 have been sickened from eating Chinese pet treats, including those containing chicken or duck.  Yet despite these concerns, chicken can now be processed in China and sent back to this country for human consumption even though there will be no on-site USDA inspectors in Chinese processing facilities to ensure food safety. Furthermore, Chinese-processed chicken does not have to bear “Country Of Origin Labeling,” which means that consumers will not know if they are purchasing or eating chicken processed in China. To make matters worse, under USDA rules, Chinese-processed chicken can be used in the National School Lunch Program and other federal child nutrition programs, despite the fact that children are particularly vulnerable to foodborne illnesses and dangerous chemicals. Even more alarming is that chicken raised and slaughtered in China may eventually be imported directly into the United States, despite the fact that a December 2013 USDA audit found that China’s poultry slaughter system is not yet equivalent to that of the United States in terms of food safety practices. Given the many reported, critical lapses in China's enforcement of its food safety laws, both Chinese-processed and Chinese-slaughtered poultry could pose a potential threat to public health in the United States, and immediate action by Congress and the President is needed. By starting this petition, we urge Congress, President Obama, and his administration to stop chicken from, or processed in, China from reaching our supermarkets and the meals we feed our school children by: (1) Ensuring that Chinese-processed chicken is not included in the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program; and (2) Preventing funds from being used to implement any rule that would allow poultry raised or slaughtered in China to be exported to the United States. Fourteen members of Congress have already publicly supported these goals in an open letter to the Agricultural Appropriations Committee. We, Bettina Siegel and Nancy Huehnergarth are concerned parents who care a great deal about food and food safety. Please join with us and these lawmakers to show Congress, President Obama, and his administration that American consumers care about food safety for themselves and their families. Thank you!

Speak up for California Salmon! No to Senate & House Bills 2533 & 2898

We are asking you to take a moment to help us address a critical issue, Water! The current water bills (link to bill 2533 here and bill 2898 here) introduced by Sen. Feinstein and Rep. Valadao in the Senate and House will be up for consideration in Congress before the end of the year. These bills weaken protections for salmon in order to pump more water from the Delta in Northern California for use primarily for big ag in the San Joaquin Valley. Water is a public resource, and therefore should include all constituents. These bills dramatically weaken or completely eliminate consideration of water for the environment, specifically for wild California salmon, which need cold water released at certain times of the year to spawn, rear and migrate to the ocean. They would also promote new taxpayer subsidized and salmon killing dams.   We understand that ag needs water. So do salmon! Sacrificing the environment, salmon and the multi-billion dollar fishing industry to move more water is a dangerous and biased approach. We need a long-term solution for the drought which reflects the needs of all constituents, human as well as wildlife. We know how do to this. More conservation groundwater clean up and management, water recycling and capturing urban stormwater can provide plenty of additional water for cities and agriculture. And restoring habitat and ensuring adequate flows can help restore salmon and the environment.   We are asking for your help, because to risk the health and future viability of wild salmon runs in California due to poor legislation is inexcusable. Speak up for Salmon!

Stop the Reduction of Opioid Supply in 2017

I am 27 and I am a chronic pain sufferer, I know chronic pain sufferers of all ages. We all depend on our opioid medications to function. We are not addicts, however addicts also suffer from lack of compassion and resources to HELP with their illness. It seems that chronic pain whatever the cause is being overlooked and under-treated. At the rate prescribed our medications are barely treating the pain we have but we have taken what we could get without complaint. Why? Because the moment we complain that our dosage is too low we are black labeled by the media, the DEA, CDC and sometimes, saddest of all, our doctors. The doctors who are being pressured to lower or even cut off our medication supply by the DEA. Pain Management doctors who are supposed treat and manage pain, yet they can't do their job when being bullied by people in administrative positions, who don't have the training needed to understand Chronic Pain or the many illnesses that go along with it. You wouldn't deny insulin to a diabetic, or chemo to a cancer patient. This is life or death for millions of Chronic Pain sufferers. Without these medications we cannot, spend time with family, eat meals, shower, have sex, have any hope of getting out of bed at all. Instead we are confined to our beds day in and day out with the pain so loud nothing can penetrate it. We lose relationships, we lose hope, we stop wishing for cures, we stop wishing for tomorrow and unfortunately without these medications some do stop tomorrow from coming.   Please stand with the 100 Million Chronic Pain sufferers in the US alone and tell the DEA and the CDC that this is NOT OKAY! We must not let them take Millions of lives by restricting and/or taking away our medication!   #ReducePainNotMedication   DEA Cutting Opioid Supply in 2017 October 04, 2016By Pat Anson, Editor It’s going to get even harder for chronic pain patients in the United States to get prescriptions refilled for hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine and other opioids classified as Schedule II controlled substances. The Drug Enforcement Administration has announced plans to reduce the amount of almost every Schedule II opioid pain medication manufactured in the U.S. by 25 percent or more. The 2017 quota for hydrocodone, which is sold under brand names like Vicodin, Lortab and Lorcet, is being reduced by a third. The DEA’s order, which is being published in the Federal Register, comes just seven months after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines that discourage primary care physicians from prescribing opioids from chronic pain. The guidelines have had a chilling effect on many patients and their doctors, who have reduced opioid doses or stopped prescribing them altogether.Opioid prescribing was falling years before the CDC and DEA acted. According to IMS Health, hydrocodone prescriptions in the U.S. plunged by 22 percent from nearly 120 million in 2014 to 93.5 million in 2015. The “established quota” for hydrocodone in 2017 is being reduced to 58.4 million prescriptions under the DEA order. “The purpose of quotas are to provide for the adequate and uninterrupted supply for legitimate medical need of the types of schedule I and II controlled substances that have a potential for abuse, while limiting the amounts available to prevent diversion,” the DEA said in a press release. “Once the aggregate quota is set, DEA allocates individual manufacturing and procurement quotas to those companies that apply for it.  DEA may revise a company’s quota at any time during the year if change is warranted due to increased sales or exports; new manufacturers entering the market; new product development; or product recalls.” The DEA has been under growing political pressure to reduce the supply of opioids. A group of U.S. senators sent a letter to the agency this summer demanding that opioid quotas be reduced. “We urge DEA to utilize its existing quota setting authority, to the fullest extent possible, to combat this epidemic,” said the letter from Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Edward Markey (D-MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Angus King (I-ME), and Joe Manchin (D-WV). “Fourteen billion opioid pills are now dispensed annually in the United States – enough for every adult American to have a bottle of pills. Certainly, the pharmaceutical industry is at fault for decades of misleading information about their products and the medical community bears responsibility for its role in over-prescribing these dangerous and addictive drugs, but we remain deeply troubled by the sheer volume of opioids available – volumes that are approved by DEA.” Although opioid pain medication is routinely blamed by politicians, federal agencies and the media for the nation’s so-called opioid epidemic, recent studies in several states have found that most drug overdoses are actually caused by illegal opioids such as heroin and bootleg fentanyl. There are also increasing signs that pain patients unable to get opioids legally are turning to pain medication sold on the streets, some of it counterfeit and laced with fentanyl. Efforts to restrict the supply of opioids may only be making things worse. Law enforcement agencies in West Virginia recently said a federal crackdown on opioids – dubbed the Bluefield Pill Initiative -- may have contributed to a recent spike in heroin cases, according to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. “We are seeing an increase in heroin because pills are in fewer quantity,” said Sgt. J.S. McCarty, who heads a local crime task force. “Without pills an opioid addict’s only choice is heroin.”

Save the Jade Festival!

We need your help! The 22nd annual Jade Festival, scheduled for October 11-13, 2013, is threatened with cancellation due to the Government shutdown. This annual fund raiser for Pacific Valley School (smallest school district in California) and South Coast Community land trust, is without a permit and the adjointing National Forest campgroud is closed. We have until October 9 to save it. Located on the Big Sur coast, this is one of the largest lapidary shows of it's type in the world. It the only major annual community reunion for the people of this beutiful, rugged, and isolated area. It is an opportunity for Monterey Country to share it's treasures.

Impeach Donald J Trump: The Million American Petition

Your signature is the new vote; it's not too late.  The Constitution of the United States, Art. 2, S. 4, provides, that the president, vice-president, and civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors. We, the undersigned, lobby for the impeachment of Donald J. Trump suspected of treason, in violation of THE USA PATRIOT ACT, for conspiring with Russia in tampering with the results of the 2016 election results. He and his administration are an immediate threat to national security, and his use of intimidation as president presents undeniable challenges in this investigation. Ergo, we petition his immediate removal from office as well as the removal of Vice President Mike Pence and all civil officers appointed under his rule pending the results of his administration's investigation. Donald J. Trump has violated the Federal law under civil and criminal ordinances with his documented use of libelous and insulting hate speech referencing American citizens of color, immigrants and those practicing the Muslim faith. His promotion and acceptance of violence towards American citizens has incited violence, discrimination and increased tensions throughout this nation. Furthermore, Donald J. Trump is in violation of state law in the following 34 states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado,  Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming  He is guilty of multiple counts of cyber bullying, before, during and following his election campaign, the most egregious being his statements regarding Mexicans, Muslims, the black community and his continuous taunting of China. Unlawful conduct of any kind, be it past, present or future is unacceptable of any person holding the office of President of the United States of America. He has caused international conflict with our allies and is dangerously close to destroying peaceful foreign relations. Donald J. Trump’s leadership poses a threat to the peace and safety of our nation on both national and international levels. His immoral reputation and misconduct are an embarrassment and threat to the freedoms this country stands for and will not be tolerated by American citizens.

California's Secession from the Union!

In light of the current election results, we need to make a drastic move and demonstrate that California is not in favor of the racist, misogynistic, and archaic principles displayed by the current GOP candidate. We need to PROGRESS, not REGRESS and America will NOT be great under the misguided leadership of a president with no commitment to his own so-called values. As we have seen throughout his campaign he has repeatedly lied to our faces by claiming the truth of his comments were false. He is not apt or qualified enough to preside over our country and California should not have to endure four years of unsound leadership. A Democracy is representative of what people want, however, with the Electoral College in this country the results are not always a representation of what people want. With the power vested in us as citizens, we should exercise our rights and show our displeasure by seceding from the Union. In the spring of 2019, California will hold a referendum to seek its exit from the Union. We seek secession not only due to the election results but for a myriad of other reasons. Including, but not limited to the following: Peace and security, elections and government, trade and regulation, debt and taxes, natural resources, immigration, education, the environment, health and medicine.  This is the best decision for our state and our people, being a part of the union is holding us back from the greatness we can achieve on our own.  Please spread the word.  Inform yourselves!  https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/yescalifornia/pages/1/attachments/original/1475330254/Yes_California_Calexit_Book.pdf?1475330254 #CALEXIT

Save Aleppo

As it stands, there are thousands of civilians left cold in the crossfire in Aleppo. The bare minimum we seek to do with this petition is ensure that they make it out safe.  In the past few days, air strikes, shelling and street-to-street combat in Syria, particularly in Aleppo’s eastern neighborhoods, have killed or injured scores of civilians. Since December 13th, thousands more fled the fighting in besieged eastern Aleppo with nothing more than the clothes on their back and their children in their arms. We write with urgency to request that you use the full authority of your office to convene international negotiations designed to stop the modern-day genocide in Syria, stabilize the country, effect the return to Syria of all refugees, provide for political change towards a popularly supported, accountable Syrian leadership, and hold Bashar Al-Assad’s regime accountable for all war crimes it has been inflicting upon the Syrian people. The international community must do everything they can to put a stop to this inhumane war. The Syrian regime must give safe passage to citizens trapped in the city and allow aid workers into Aleppo to save as many lives as they can. This is not politics, this is human rights. Please, let us not be responsible for witnessing genocide being committed on an entire city and not moving the masses in order to stop it.
