The Gobierno de Guatemala, or the Government of Guatemala, is a democratic republic based on the system of separation of powers, which includes executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The country's president is elected through popular vote and serves as both the head of state and the head of the government. The legislative authority lies with the Congress of the Republic and the judicial power is executed by the Supreme Court of Justice and other tribunals. Despite its democratic framework, Guatemala has been challenged with political instability, corruption, and issues relating to human rights.
