FA, which stands for Friedreich's Ataxia, is a genetic, progressive disorder that affects the peripheral nerves and spinal cord, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, loss of coordination and balance (ataxia), and speech difficulties. It typically emerges in childhood or adolescence and may also cause heart problems and diabetes. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning both copies of the gene in each cell must have mutations for the condition to be expressed. Currently, there is no cure for Friedreich's Ataxia, but treatments are available to manage its symptoms.
