Eric Leroy Adams is an American politician and former police officer who has served as the 110th mayor of New York City since 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, Adams began his career in law enforcement, joining the New York City Transit Police and later the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he served for over 20 years and retired as a captain. His political career took off in 2006 when he was elected to the New York State Senate, representing the 20th district in Brooklyn until 2013. In 2013, he made history as the first Black American elected as Brooklyn Borough President, a role he held until 2021. Adams is known for his focus on public safety, education, and economic development.
