Montreal Please Reverse Your Decision to Ban Pit Bulls!

A few weeks ago, we learned of the potential of Montreal banning pit bulls, but we certainly didn't think it was going to pass.  Sadly it has and it is a virtual death sentence to thousands of dogs in the area, but we can stop it. At a meeting Tuesday, Montreal City Council passed a measure that effectively bans any dog that looks anything similar to that of a pit bull. Dogs in the shelter with this look cannot be adopted.  Breeds not allowed are American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier and Staffordshire bull terriers.   For dogs without an owner, the day of the legislation, those dogs will be effectively euthanized.  It is worth noting that rescue groups were able to get some of the dogs at risk out of local shelters in advance of the measure passing.   This ban needs to be stopped now.  We have the utmost confidence that with your help, and our extensive networking in the animal rescue community, we can stop this.

Tell Sister City, Busan, South Korea, That We’re Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats.

Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Mayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Mayor Denis Coderre of Montréal(Canada). Tell Sister City, Busan, South Korea, That We’re Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats. Busan became sister city with Los Angeles in 1967, Chicago in 2007, and Montréal(Canada)in 2000. Yet Busan, South Korea is responsible for the horrendous dog and cat meat trade. In South Korea, the home of global companies such as Hyundai/Kia, Samsung, LG, Daewoo, SK, POSCO,…, an estimated 2.5 million dogs are tortured and slaughtered every year because of the greed of dog eaters and the dog meat industry. And one of the largest markets in South Korea that sells dogs dead and alive for meat is the infamous “Gupo Market” in Busan Metropolitan City. If you have ever wondered what a hell would be like, just take a visit or watch the videos on Gupo Dog Meat Market. This place is a “Hell on Earth” with defenseless man’s best friends in cages after cages waiting for the heartless customers to order them to be slaughtered on the spot by electrocution, hanging, beating,…and thrown into boiling water sometimes while they are still alive. Dogs are being killed in full view of other dogs terrified in cages, in public and in broad daylight. The Gupo Dog Meat Market is also within the boundary of the “School Environment, Hygiene, Cleanup Zone” specified in the School Health Act as evidenced by the Busan News article and therefore is in violation of School Health Act. (http://koreandogs.org/dispute-over-the-gupo-livestock-markets-violation-of-the-school-health-act/) The officials in the Busan Bukgu District clearly chose to ignore provisions of the School Health Act and are disregarding the health of the children attending the Dugchun Elementary School and are putting those children at risk. Please imagine letting your children attend school hearing the screaming of the meat dogs and seeing them writhe in agony, being brutally slaughtered right in front of their young eyes. It will either traumatize these children for life or make them immune to the suffering of animals, turning them into the next generation of animal abusers. There are laws in South Korea against selling dogs and cats for consumption yet these laws are blatantly ignored. Please watch this undercover video by animal rights activists in South Korea:  http://youtu.be/3uR8R8Mu70Q Please inform Busan Mayor Byung-Soo Suh that citizens of Los Angeles, Chicago and Montréal (Canada) and their friends insist that they issue an official document mandating that the following existing laws be enforced: Livestock Product Sanitary Control Act, Article 2, Item 1 which governs the raising, slaughter and disposal of livestock and the processing, distribution and inspection of livestock products, does not categorize dogs as livestock that can be processed as food.  Therefore this makes the dog meat industry technically illegal. Food Sanitation Act, Article 7, Clause 1, Korean Food Standards Codex specified by the Food and Drug Administration, does not include dogs in the list of raw materials that can be processed and cooked as food, therefore making raising and slaughtering dogs for consumption illegal. Animal Protection Act: ARTICLE 3. BASIC PRINCIPLES FOR PROTECTION OF ANIMALS Each person shall endeavor to observe the following principles in raising, caring for, or protecting an animal: 1. Each person shall ensure that an animal maintains its natural behavior and original physical shape to live an ordinary life; 2. Each person shall ensure that an animal does not suffer from thirst, hunger, or malnutrition; Each person shall ensure that an animal is free to express normal behavior without experiencing discomfort; 4. Each person shall ensure that an animal is free from pain, injury, and disease; 5. Each person shall ensure that an animal is free from fear and distress. ARTICLE 8. PROHIBITION OF ANIMAL ABUSE ① No one shall commit the following acts toward animals: 1. Act of killing by brutal methods, such as hanging 2. Act of Killing in public or in another animal’s presence ③ No one shall commit the following acts toward abandoned or abused animals: 1. Act of capture and sell or kill. 2. Act of trade or purchase knowing that the animals are abandoned or abused. ARTICLE 9. ANIMAL TRANSPORTATION ① Anyone transporting an animal that has been selected by decree from the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries must make an effort to abide by the following: 1. Ensure that the animals are properly fed, watered and drive carefully so that animals are not shocked or harmed from sudden departures or stops. 2. The vehicle used for transportation must be built to prevent any harm during transportation and to minimize any pain due to poor ventilation or sudden changes in temperature, etc. 4. Avoid any possible injuries while moving an animal and minimize any pain or discomfort, such as sudden changes in body temperature or difficulty in breathing. ARTICLE 46. PUNISHMENT ① Anyone who violates Article 8, Clause 1 through 3 shall be punished with up to one year in prison or a maximum fine of 10 million Korean won ($7,000 USD). Ministry of Environment's Conservation of Water Quality and Ecosystem Act,  Article 15 Clause 1 Item 2 and Article 78 Item 3, the act of discharging excrement, livestock waste water, animal carcass, waste materials or sludge into public water is punishable by up to one year in prison or a maximum fine of 10 million Korean won ($7,000 USD). Livestock Safety Management Act, slaughterhouses are only authorized to slaughter animals they are registered to handle. No slaughterhouse is registered to slaughter dogs because dogs are not subject to slaughter under this law. We believe these demands are in line with the goal of sister cities to establish friendly communications in the areas of tourism, commerce, cultural exchange and public health. International and Korean media coverage of the brutal dog and cat meat trade in South Korea has stained Busan, South Korea’s image and severely tarnished your city’s sister city relationship. The time to end this tragedy is now. The favor of your reply is requested. Thank you for taking swift action! PS:  Click here to find more ways to contact the Mayors of Los Angeles, Chicago and Montréal(Canada).  http://koreandogs.org/contact-mayors-of-busan-sister-cities/ It's very quick and simple.  http://koreandogs.org/

_______________ We, the undersigned, call on Mayor Denis Coderre to reestablish the position of Director of the Montréal Botanical Garden. On June 16, 2017, the Director of Space for Life, Charles-Mathieu Brunelle, announced that a single individual will now lead the four institutions collectively known as Space for Life: the Montréal Botanical Garden, the Biodôme, the Rio Tinto-Alcan Planetarium and the Montréal Insectarium. This administrative change is of serious concern to us, since it jeopardizes the unique identity of the Botanical Garden, and diminishes its autonomy as well as its national and international prominence.  The Montréal Botanical Garden is one of the most prestigious scientific museums in the world today, an iconic site, thanks to the vision and determination of its founder, Brother Marie Victorin, as well as the commitment of his successors, scientists Jacques Rousseau, Marcel Raymond, Pierre Bourque, André Bouchard and Gilles Vincent. We therefore regard it as legitimate and essential, Mayor Coderre, that you appoint an individual of the calibre of these former directors as the head of the Montréal Botanical Garden. Such a decision will allow this institution to exercise its leadership in the field of science, as it has for the past 86 years. Consequently, we hereby request that you reestablish the position of Director of the Montréal Botanical Garden and appoint an individual dedicated exclusively to accomplishing its mission, defending its interests and enhancing its profile.

In a generation of cruelty-free makeup and vegan trends, horse carriages are considered and ARE animal cruelty. Each year the horses weaken, are overworked, abused, must carry people through the city and cars throughout the day and not only with many deaths but now with proof of a video in Montreal on September 4 2017 at 4.00 pm, opposite the Notre-Dame Basilica, we see a black horse that has fainted and does not wake up with the driver frantically trying to bring the horse back to his feet for about 10 minutes. It is disgusting and will permanently damage the image of the city and its residents as well as Quebec. This should be banned since a long time ago and could be replaced by riding lessons away from the city. Tourists should be encouraged to walk in the city rather than to ride. This can also encourage them to take buses or the metro and stimulate the local economy!

Don't Let Them Send Mamadou Back, Help Him Stay!

Canada can always use hard workers, and I say any immigrant who wants to contribute is a valuable asset to our nation. Here is one of them. Mamadou arrived in Canada recently via foot, risking his life to live in Canada. He left behind a past wherein he witnessed his father murdered by rebels, and his family home burnt down. He does not know where any of his relatives are today, but he knows that he wants to call someplace home. Having been recently chased by immigration officers in his home in NYC (working as a taxi driver), he decided to walk through the forest to Canada where he was found by an RCMP officer who then helped him reach safety. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/mamadou-rcmp-quebec-border-refugee-safe-third-country-1.4058344 Unfortunately, Mamadou might need more help than that if he hopes to stay. It has been three weeks since Mamadou left the refugee detention centre, three weeks since he left the hospital, and little over a month since he was found collapsed in the snow, too frozen to move. Help him embark on a stable, prosperous journey in our community today. Someone who has had to wait nearly their entire life before being able to build one (without ever giving up hope), is surely someone who will fight the good fight and be a good role-model citizen/neighbour for us all. Let us urge Mr. Coderre to be in contact with the CIC, and offer his support on behalf of Mamadou today. Ban the banning of Pit Bulls and Breeds that resemble Pit Bulls!

Pit Bulls, American Staffordshire terriers, American bull dogs, Boxers, and much more breeds are beautiful, loving dogs when put in the hands of the right owners. I understand there are a lot of issues surrounding these dogs, such as dog fighting, but that is the humans fault for putting a dog capable of love in a terrible situation. It doesn't make sense to ban a dog, or any life form for that matter, for something that isn't their fault. And if a dog of said breeds attacks a human, then that one dog should be put down, not the whole breed. We can't classify one dogs actions as an action of all dogs under that breed, just as we cannot do that to humans. What we should do instead is enforce laws that make it harder to own any domestic animal. Such as: mandatory professional training where the owners and dogs are involved, and must pass. Liscensing for every person owning an animal, that involves a proper screening process. And blacklisting for anyone who abuses an animal from ever owning one again, after a proper prison sentence. Creating laws like the examples given make more sense then banning a life form. Especially when banning a life form basically means genocide among pit bulls and breeds that look like pit bulls. Like the American Staffordshire terrior for example, this dog was bred to be a nanny, and as someone who owns one, they are gentle giants who are PERFECT for watching after you, or a child. It makes no sense why one would ban such a loving, gentle, loyal breed. And that's just one example. Please, don't ban these beautiful dogs, it just isn't right.
