The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the highest-ranking judge in the Supreme Court of India and the head of the judiciary of India. Chosen by the President of India, the CJI presides over the Supreme Court and is responsible for its proper functioning. As well as hearing cases, the CJI often acts as a spokesperson for the judiciary and maintains its relations with the executive and the legislature. They play a vital role in the appointment of judges to the higher judiciary, and uphold and enforce the constitution and the laws of the country. They ensure the principle of judicial independence is maintained and advocate for the rights and privileges of Indian citizens.
