The alarming rise in violence and harassment against women in Northern Ireland underscores the urgent need for dedicated safety measures. Statistics indicate an increase in reported incidents, with over 30% of women experiencing domestic violence and numerous cases of public harassment going unreported. These figures reveal the prevalence of gender-based violence and the frequent lack of adequate resources and protection for women in our communities.

Despite being a critical issue, women's safety often lacks specific focus and funding in safety policies and public resource allocations. Northern Ireland must demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding women by implementing robust, dedicated initiatives that cater specifically to their safety needs.

A 2023 Ulster University report based on a survey of 542 women found that roughly 70% experienced some form of violence or abuse within the previous 12 months

The North's femicide rate is the second highest in Europe.

We propose the establishment of a Women's Safety Minister, tasked with the creation and oversight of programs tailored to address various aspects of women's security. The Minister should work to strengthen existing laws and develop new policies where gaps exist, ensuring no woman feels vulnerable or neglected. Additionally, community-based outreach programs must be designed to educate the public and empower women with knowledge on personal safety, legal rights, and support available to them.

Investing in safety infrastructure, such as improved street lighting and CCTV coverage, alongside emergency response systems, is imperative. Besides governmental measures, local businesses and community organizations must also actively participate in creating safer environments for women.

Without immediate and sustained action, the safety concerns of women in Northern Ireland risk being marginalized. Let us hold our policymakers accountable and prompt a shift towards proactive safety measures that prioritize women’s wellbeing.

Sign this petition to urge the Northern Ireland government to establish a dedicated minister to women's safety.
