Universal Basic Means of Production

The Issue

If this year has taught us anything, it is that hindsight is 2020. This is the year that so much becomes clear for the American people and the world. We call upon all Governors to take a step in the right direction for their citizens by implementing programs that focus on creating a Universal Basic Means of Production #UBMoP.

UBMoP can be achieved by utilizing 3D printers, vertical/aquaponics/hydroponics farms, lending libraries, harvesting wasted energy (ie turbines in city water pipes), etc. in each home, school, and neighborhood.

These are just a few of the benefits a UBMoP will have:

  • Giving members of the community skills in technology, life, and other important STEM subjects
  • Fortifying communities in times of disruption in the supply chains
Bringing back some forms of consumer products to the locally-produced level
  • Cutting the cost of living for many low-income neighborhoods
Reduce the need and cost of implementing Universal Basic Income programs

Implementing a UBMoP program will not cost as much as you might think:

  • Every state already has enthusiast/hobby groups or 3D printing companies. Working in collaboration with them, 3D printers can print the components needed to make more 3D printers to distribute.
  • Making filament is relatively easy. Our current recycling programs are wasteful in many ways (taxpayer $, cost of long-distance transport, etc) and pretty much defeat their own purpose. Current local recycling facilities can collect various types of plastics, glass, aluminum, and other materials. Machines that make 3D Printer filament are extremely easy to make.
  • With the advent of 3D printers that form items from carbon nanotubes made out of the carbon in the air, soon we can upgrade the printers in communities to make some items literally out of the air (https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2018/03/09/carbon-nanotube-membrane-breakthrough-is-real-world-star-trek-replicator-mattershift/#7047486e520f
  • Some parts for the vertical/aquaponics/hydroponics farms can be 3D printed locally. Additionally, many tasks of the farms can be automated, reducing the need for extensive human labor.
  • Produce from the farms that are not sold can be transformed into mulch, compost, or biofuels that either help offset the cost of powering the farms or used in heaters.

While it is true that such programs will dramatically change local economies in various ways, the potential benefits of implementing a system of UBMoP are simply astounding. It is a concept whose time has come and we want more community and state leaders to work in collaboration with the people to form a more equitable and resilient United States.
