Revive Trackless Trolleys in the United States for Sustainable Transportation
The Issue
I am deeply saddened by the decline of trackless trolleys, also known as trolleybuses, in our country. Once upon a time, 65 American cities were home to these unique vehicles. However, as of 2024, only four cities - Philadelphia, Dayton, San Francisco and Seattle - still operate them. This is not just about nostalgia; it's about sustainability and practicality.
Trolleybuses are more sustainable than modern battery electric buses. They do not rely on fossil fuels or batteries that require mining and disposal. Instead they draw power from overhead wires which can be supplied by renewable energy sources like wind or solar power.
Moreover, unlike regular trolleys that run on tracks and are limited to their fixed routes, trackless trolleys have the flexibility to navigate around obstacles and vehicles on the road due to their rubber tires. This makes them an efficient mode of transportation in busy urban areas.
It's time we recognize the value of these forgotten gems of public transportation and bring back trackless trolleys across America. Not only would this move honor our history but it would also pave way for a more sustainable future with efficient public transport systems.
Join me in urging city planners across America to reintroduce trackless trolleys into our urban landscapes for a greener tomorrow! Please sign this petition today!
