The Issue

Team Theorist and Theorist Media have long been industry frontrunners in the sphere of YouTube. Starting with Game Theory back in 2011, Theorist Media has been consistently at the forefront of YouTube's trends and changes. In that time, they have witnessed and at times chronicled the landscape of not just the platform, but also their own company changing around them. Even after the original host and star of their series' retired, Team Theorist have rolled with the punches and remained steadfast and dedicated, continuing their work in maintaining consistency and excellence across at least five channels whilst keeping up with and trying to stay ahead of the trends of the platform.

In that spirit of being trendsetters for the industry, the members of Team Theorist have spoken: they wish to unionize. They have partnered with both the Writer's Guild of America West (WGAW) and the Motion Pictures Editors' Guild (IATSE) and launched a formal union initiative at Theorist Media. They have cited two main reasons for wishing to unionize.

1: To inspire change across the creator industry of YouTube, an unstandardized landscape where workers are vulnerable to mistreatment and abuse. By showing that unions can work at a YouTube creation company, they can inspire other companies to form unions and bring up the quality of work and pay for more than just themselves.

2: To fight for better wages, working conditions, and to give the team more of a voice within Theorist Media.

According to the team, their union drive has received not just a supermajority, but near-unanimous support from the teams' 20+ employees. However, Theorist Media, under the ownership of Lunar X, has declined recognition of their unionizing effort despite their supermajority, and is insisting the team hold a formal election through the National Labor Relations Board, where Lunar X can tie up and delay the proceedings for exorbitant periods of time. This is a naked attempt to kill the initiative to maintain an administrative direction that, according to the team, numerous employees have grown unhappy with.

We, the undersigned, are outside members of the theorist community. In signing this petition, we are calling on Lunar X and Theorist Media to voluntarily recognize the union(s) that Team Theorist are trying to establish at Theorist Media. To not do so, despite unanimous support, is incorrigible. As fans of this team and their work, we insist that Lunar X do the right thing and take this necessary step to ensure the members of the team receive fair treatment, fair compensation, and a voice in the company. It is a heartbreaking development that the voices of this vaunted team of diligent, passionate, creatives are falling on deaf ears with Lunar X. We, as fans of the shows these workers create, are disturbed by this development and are having our trust in the company eroded as a result of Lunar X's failure to recognize the union(s).

Do the right thing, Lunar X.
