Autonomy for Puerto Rico with Spain Reclaim Our Rights & Our Indigenous Identity
The Issue
Puerto Rico deserves more than broken promises. We deserve a real future.
For over a century, Puerto Rico has remained a U.S. territory — without full rights, without self-determination, and without recognition of who we truly are.
It’s time for something different. Something powerful. Something historic.
We, the people, call for a new path forward:
Puerto Rico must be granted the option to reunify with Spain as an autonomous province, restoring the dignity stolen from us in 1898 and reclaiming our identity as an indigenous Caribbean nation.
🇪🇸 Why Autonomy with Spain?
Spain already grants full autonomy to regions like Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, and the Canary Islands. These provinces control their education, healthcare, economy, and culture — all while participating in the Spanish government and enjoying full European Union citizenship.
Puerto Rico once had that same autonomy.
In 1897, Spain granted Puerto Rico a Carta Autonómica, giving us a local parliament, internal governance, and representation in Madrid. But just one year later, the U.S. invaded and seized our island — with no Puerto Rican voice present in the Treaty of Paris that sealed our fate.
It’s time to correct that historical injustice.
🌍 What Autonomy Means for Puerto Rico
✅ Full EU citizenship — allowing Puerto Ricans to live, study, work, and travel freely across Europe
✅ Economic development through EU investment in energy, agriculture, tourism, and education
✅ Our own regional parliament, with self-governance over local laws, health, culture, and infrastructure
✅ Political representation in both the Spanish Parliament and the European Union
✅ An official place in the international community — not as a colony, but as a self-governing nation within Spain
🧬 Recognition of the Taíno People
Puerto Ricans are not just defined by colonization — we are descendants of the Taíno, the Indigenous people of the Caribbean.
Modern DNA studies confirm what our ancestors passed down: we are still here.
Yet the United States has never recognized Puerto Rico’s Indigenous identity. We are not acknowledged as a Native Nation. We receive no protections, no land rights, no cultural autonomy.
Spain, by contrast, already protects regional and Indigenous identities, including in the Canary Islands — where Guanche heritage is part of the autonomous government’s cultural mandate.
We demand the same:
That Puerto Rico, under Spanish autonomy, be recognized as an Indigenous nation, with full protection of our language, land, history, and cultural rights.
