Facilitate Asylum for Gay Couples to Canada

The Issue

Love should never be a reason to live in fear. Across the world, LGBTQ+ couples face unimaginable persecution simply for being who they are. In over 60 countries, same-sex relationships are criminalized. In some, the punishment is death. For many, fleeing their homeland is not a choice—it’s a matter of survival.

💔 A Personal Story: Amir & Rami
Amir and Rami met in Damascus, Syria. Their love blossomed quietly, hidden from neighbors, friends, and even family. When a relative discovered their relationship, they were violently attacked and threatened with death. Amir escaped to Lebanon, while Rami was arrested and tortured. After months of separation, they reunited in Turkey—but even there, they faced harassment and danger. Their dream is to live freely and safely in Canada, together. But the asylum process is slow, and couples like them often face separation or rejection.

Their story is not unique. It’s one of thousands.

📊 The Facts

🌍 64 countries still criminalize homosexuality, according to ILGA World’s 2023 report.

⚖️ In 11 countries, same-sex acts are punishable by death.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 LGBTQ+ asylum seekers are often forced to prove their relationship is genuine—an invasive and humiliating process.
🇨🇦 Canada recognizes LGBTQ+ asylum claims, but processing times can exceed 2 years, and couples are frequently separated during resettlement.

💔 Many LGBTQ+ refugees experience higher rates of trauma, depression, and suicide due to prolonged uncertainty and isolation.

🛑 The Problem
While Canada has made strides in protecting LGBTQ+ rights, the asylum system remains ill-equipped to handle the unique challenges faced by gay couples. Bureaucratic delays, lack of specialized support, and inconsistent recognition of same-sex partnerships leave many vulnerable and alone.

✅ What We’re Asking
We call on the Canadian government to:

Prioritize LGBTQ+ couples in asylum processing
Ensure couples are not separated during resettlement
Provide trauma-informed legal and emotional support
Recognize same-sex partnerships regardless of country of origin laws

❤️ Why It Matters
This isn’t just about immigration policy—it’s about human dignity. It’s about giving people the chance to live, love, and thrive without fear. Canada has the opportunity to lead with compassion and justice.

By signing this petition, you’re standing up for love. You’re standing up for Amir and Rami—and for thousands like them.

Let’s make Canada a safe haven for love.
