Demand urgent reform to mental health laws in Australia
The issue
THE ISSUE: The healthcare industry regulation of psychologists being sworn to report any patients who mention wanting to self harm, to police. Unfortunately, this is dependent on the discretion of the patients relationship with their physiologist which is a very grey area, as a suicidal person is not going to want to wait 6 months or years to confess his suicidal feelings once trust and rapport has been built with their physiologist. The fear that a mental health team will lock them up in a mental institution is very real. Government work here is desperately needed so it's regulated more carefully allowing physiologist:patient to be able to comfortably express their thoughts and cry for help to their psychologist, but give the patient a say in progressing to another professional or team better equipped to deal with suicidal feelings, not force patients, this is vital to allow them to feel they have some control in life, when they are at their lowest and usually can't control anything else around them, hence being up against a rock and a hard place so to speak. It could be hit or miss if patients don't get a good psychologist/team, which pushes aussies more into the corner just going through with the suicide because they feel they can't open up to anyone & there's no rehabilitation out unless institutionalised. We call for in-person sessions to have anonymity where they're able to express in a safe environment feelings of wanting to self harm, without repercussions of entrapment into hospitalisation.
With this said, I do still support the current law if a patient were to mention harming Another person, this be mandatory reported.
I know firsthand the devastating impact of mental health crises. My father, a vibrant fascade as a community member, and my beloved dad, the man of our family, took his own life before he could access the care and support he desperately needed. His appointment with a mental health care team came too late, and our family has been left to cope with the aftermath of losing someone so dear to us.
This isn't just our story; it's the heartbreaking reality for many families across Australia. Currently, the laws governing self-harm admissions and mental health care access often prevent timely intervention for those who are in critical need. The bureaucratic hurdles and delayed response times are failing our loved ones, resulting in preventable tragedies. Research indicates that around 3,000 Australians take their own lives each year. Immediate improvements in policy are essential to address this crisis and save lives.
WE PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONABLE CHANGES:
- Streamline the SELF-admission process for mental health patients, ensure immediate access to emergency care without bureaucratic delays, and provide ongoing support resources for individuals at risk of self-harm without hospitalisation.
- Ensure stricter face to face psychologist/patient confidentiality and better equip psychologists to know how to handle a suicidal person, opposed to handing them over to other officials.
By signing this petition, you are lending your voice to demand that the Australian government prioritise this mental health reform. Help Prostember ensure that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one due to insufficient and inadequate mental health care. Let's work together to create a system that truly supports those in need. Please sign this petition to urge our lawmakers to take immediate action.
