Stop demolishing Harvey history!

The Issue

We demand that the City of Harvey:

  1. reuse, sell, and/or preserve all historic brick buildings and STOP THE ILLEGAL PLANS TO DEMOLISH THEM
  2.  use the $750,000 HUD demolition grant to demolish burnt-out wooden homes throughout Harvey INSTEAD

NO MORE DEMOLITIONS WITHOUT EXHAUSTING ALL OTHER OPTIONS FIRST! Harvey has lost enough historic buildings.  Why do city politicians want to destroy the buildings we have left? What is their hidden agenda? Why do they refuse to offer them up for sale? Why the secrecy?

This is the looting of Harvey cultural and architectural wealth, intentionally taking advantage of black, brown, and low-income communities within Harvey who feel they have no voice.  Valuable building materials are sold off, and Harvey residents are left with MORE EMPTY LOTS AND BROKEN PROMISES FROM POLITICIANS.

Some Motor Row history:

Motor row: people bought cars on Broadway in the early 1900s, indoors! Below is an ad from the Thornton Township High School year book for a dealership on Broadway Ave.

Architectural details found here are IRREPLACEABLE and too expensive to replicate today.

15313-15317 Broadway: once the site of an Edsel dealership, it burnt down and was replaced with this building that housed Ruble Auto Supply for decades, another Harvey family business

15307 Broadway: former Dodge/Plymouth dealer, later Don’s Auto Body

15303 Broadway: one of the oldest gas/service stations in Harvey

15305 Broadway: former Roeder family hardware store, then Chlebecki Engineering (owned by the former city of Harvey chief engineer)
