Say NO to Rezoning: Protect Marshall County's Residential and Environmental Integrity

Say NO to Rezoning: Protect Marshall County's Residential and Environmental Integrity

The Issue

Please sign this petition voicing your support for the Marshall County commissioners to vote NO to the request by Volunteer Materials to rezone the 100+ acres of agriculturally zoned parcel on Hwy 99 in Lewisburg near the Chapel Hill line to M-1 Industrial.  It is critical we obtain as many signatures as possible before the September 23rd county commissioners’ meeting.

It is extremely important that you put your street address and town in the "reason for signing" comments section to validate Marshall County residency.  After you sign the petition, skip the donation page and then comments can be entered.

Anyone who travels past Volunteer’s existing quarry on Hwy 99 on a regular basis, residents living in the immediate surrounding area as well as those several miles away are impacted today by ever increasing truck traffic, broken windshields, damages to their homes, noise, dust, etc.

Volunteer has grown substantially since inception in 2007 and is no longer a Tennessee owned company as it was acquired by Armada Materials, a private equity firm backed by Wall Street mammoth Kelso & Co. in 2023 with no interest in the local community and their business model is flipping companies for profit.

Volunteer originally sought rezoning in March, did not receive support from the Planing & Zoning commission and withdrew their request before the county commissioners on the day of the meeting.  When they resubmitted their request for rezoning, they cleverly rebranded their proposal as simply a plant modernization to reduce noise and dust.  What company invests $40+ million to simple reduce noise and dust all for the good of their employees and their neighbors??  Obviously there needs to be a huge return on that investment and the only way to achieve that is to expand their rock crushing operation.  It will only be a matter of time before the next land grab.

We are not seeking to shut down Volunteer Materials existing operation which employs many of our neighbors.  They state in their proposal to the county that they have enough reserves for 100 years of operation currently.

The land up for rezoning is currently agricultural and not appropriate for industrial use as it is fully surrounded by residential areas and in close proximity to the Duck River.  We cannot jeopardize the Duck River as it is a crucial source for our water supply as well as a popular recreation area for our families.

Please share and thank you for your support!
