The Issue

Dear Friends and fellow Americans ,

I've recently become aware of plans to burn down an 1840 farmhouse in Maryland that is one of three in a row on Harriet Tubman's Underground Railroad.  This particular house was never entered into the Historic Preservation, so as it stands right now, it is allowed to be burned down to build new homes.

I've decided to create a petition of signatures to propel the Building office of Kent County to investigate the historical importance of this Maryland house before allowing it to be burned down, in hopes that they would halt the process altogether.  Preservation Maryland has confirmed it is right on the "ceremonial route of the Underground Railroad." In addition to signing this petition, you can also call the Kent County planning Office at  (410)778-7423 press option 7 and request that a demolition delay be filed for an assessment of historical importance be conducted on property 33740 Sassafras Caldwell Rd., Galena, MD 21635.

I have always believed in the power of history to shape our understanding of the present and guide us into a compassionate, inclusive future. As someone who treasures America's rich history and diversity, I feel a deep sense of duty to protect the important landmarks that have helped forge our national identity.  It is with this conviction that I am reaching out to urge you to help stop the demolition of a significant historical house located on Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad.

This house represents not just a physical structure but a piece of our collective memory, a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who fought and escaped slavery, seeking freedom against all odds. Harriet Tubman, an American hero, led nearly 70 slaves to freedom through this secret network, and the home stands as a vital link to this storied past.

The proposed demolition is a short-sighted decision that prioritizes development over preservation. By tearing down this house, we risk losing a part of our history that serves as a constant reminder of the struggle for freedom and the triumph of the human spirit.

In light of pride month and the current political environment that is stripping us of all our rights, it is my hope that I can win this battle and it can serve a small ray of hope in maintaining our country's diversity.  I urge you to join me in this cause and help protect America's diverse and rich history by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of Harriet Tubman and other brave souls continues to inspire future generations. Please sign and share this petition widely. We will only succeed united as one.  With Gratitude 🙏
