Save our local fishing communities: Support fair access to British waters

The Issue

I skipper a small inshore trawler out of Mevagissey in Cornwall.

The 6-12 mile grounds are where my family and community have fished for generations.

After Brexit, we were told we'd take back control of our waters. That promise was broken.

Instead, a 12-year deal was signed, giving EU industrial fishing vessels access just 6 miles off our shores.

These huge boats fish relentlessly, day and night - even in storms when we can't leave the harbour. Our fishing grounds never get a chance to recover.

I've been pushed closer inshore or forced further out to sea, just to find space.

This isn't sustainable - for me, for other local fishermen, or for the stocks themselves.

We just want what the EU has for its own fishermen: a 12-mile limit for our own fleet. That's fair.

We are asking for the same rights the EU gives its own fishermen:

  • A 12-mile exclusive zone for UK vessels
  • Fair access to own resources
  • A future for our fishing and coastal communities

Our waters are part of our heritage, our food security, and our way of life. This is about survival, not politics.

It's time for the UK government to keep its promise. Support our fishermen. Reclaim our waters!
