Save Coventry University Nursery!

The Issue

Coventry University Nursery provides excellent early years care and education for the children of Coventry University students and staff, and members of the general public.

Coventry University is proposing to close the nursery on the grounds that the nursery represents too great a financial cost to the university. The closure could take place as soon as September 2023. This would give the nursery staff little opportunity to find alternative employment. Due to the scarcity of nursery provision in central Coventry, many parents would also be unable to find suitable nursery provision, meaning some would have to leave jobs or defer their degrees. This will disproportionately affect women and people on low incomes.

We are calling on Coventry University not to close the nursery, but to work instead in collaboration with nursery staff, parents and other community stakeholders, over a reasonable time-period (e.g. 3-5 years), to make the nursery financially sustainable.

We are confident that this can be achieved. The nursery is heavily oversubscribed, and there is a significant shortage of nursery provision in central Coventry. While we acknowledge there are capacity issues at the nursery at present, these are issues that can be addressed over a reasonable time-period. With the right vision and support, the nursery could thrive.
