The Issue
Dear Governor Michael Parson,
You served in the United States Army for six years, protecting the lives of all Americans. Now as the Governor of Missouri, you have the opportunity and privilege to once again defend American lives. This defense does not require heavy ammunition or soldiers, but simply wearing a mask.
Hospitals are full, health care workers are dying, and we have seen too many lives claimed by COVID-19. While all Americans can agree about the tragic loss of 2,977 American lives on September 11th, 2001, we seem to be less mindful about an enemy that cannot be seen, COVID-19. As of November 23rd, 2020, America is losing 1,540 loved ones every single day [Ref 1]. If 1,540 American soldiers died every day, would we not fight back with everything in our arsenal?
By March 1st, 2021 it is predicted that 470,934 Americans will die from COVID-19 [Ref 2]. By comparison, fewer American soldiers (407,316) were killed over the five years fighting World War II [Ref 3]. We are losing the war against COVID-19. The time to fight back is overdue, and it begins by putting on a mask all the time. Our neighbors in Kansas, and many other states, have already demonstrated that masks significantly decrease the spread of COVID-19 [Ref 4].
As a physician I pledged to protect the lives of my patients – that is why I am writing this petition. Just as you once defended your country in the Army, I am asking that you fight once again. Please implement a statewide mask mandate now. Governor Parson, can you look yourself in the mirror and honestly say “I am doing everything in my power to save lives”?
I ask any Missouri resident that supports a statewide mask mandate to please sign this electronic petition in hopes Governor Parson will take swift action to save lives. Please forward the petition on to family and friends.
