The issue

Keep Families Safe – Ban New Petrol Stations Near Homes, Schools & Child-Care Centres
Imagine tucking your child into bed just 20 metres from tanks holding 50, 000 litres of fuel.
Living within 50 m of a petrol station doubles a child’s risk of leukaemia, yet Victoria has zero rules stopping a new servo from being built right next door.

Why It Matters
Cancer – Children living within 50 m from a fuel station face twice the risk of leukaemia; benzene in fuel vapours is a WHO-listed carcinogen.
Asthma & Lung Damage – Ground-level ozone and benzene spikes trigger asthma attacks and damage lung tissue for kids and adults alike.
Birth Defects – High maternal benzene exposure is linked to spina-bifida and low birth weight.

Governments elsewhere act on this science: Singapore mandates 50 m, California recommends 91 m, France 100 m. Victoria? 0 m.

Our Solution
Amend the Victorian Planning Scheme.

No new petrol station within 50 metres of homes, schools, childcare centres or hospitals.

This common-sense buffer will slash cancer and asthma risk and bring Victoria into line with global safety standards.
