Urge the Government of India to Sign and Ratify the High Seas Treaty to Protect Our Ocean

Urge the Government of India to Sign and Ratify the High Seas Treaty to Protect Our Ocean
The Issue
The ocean is our biggest ally in the climate crisis. Without a healthy ocean, we are not winning this fight…
But our ocean, which covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, is under severe threat. Overfishing, pollution, and climate change are causing unprecedented damage to marine ecosystems. The United Nations Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement also known as the High Seas Treaty, is a beacon of hope for the enormous range of marine life that lives in the depths of our ocean. It aims to protect high seas biodiversity from the seafloor to the sea surface by establishing marine protected areas, implementing a stronger regime of environmental impact assessments, ensuring equitable sharing and access to benefits from marine genetics resources, and supporting capacity building and technology transfer. This Treaty is crucial for safeguarding ocean health and securing a sustainable future for all.
While there are already 91 country signatories and 8 ratifications to date, the Treaty needs 60 countries to ratify to become an international law and enter into force.
While the Government of India has announced it will soon sign the Treaty, it has not made this official. We urge the Government to act swiftly and turn this commitment into action by officially signing and working on ratifying the BBNJ Agreement at the United Nations in New York.
We, the youth of today, are bound to inherit the outcome of these decisions. Our generation must live with the consequences of inaction, yet we often have little say in the decisions made. This is our plea to rectify this.
The clock is ticking and time is not on our side. Scientists say life began in the ocean. Don’t let it end there.
