The Issue

Petition to Prohibit MPs Who Voted for Winter Fuel Allowance Cuts from Claiming Utilities and Expenses on First or Second Homes.

We, the undersigned, call upon the government to take immediate action to prohibit any Member of Parliament (MP) who voted in favour of reducing or cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance from claiming taxpayer-funded utilities and housing expenses for their first or second homes.

The UK Government and Parliament operate entirely on taxpayer funds. There is no hidden or secret source of money—every penny spent comes from the taxes paid by the public. All individuals within the government and Parliament are not freelancers; they work for the taxpayers, including those who have contributed taxes all of their lives. Their role is to use our tax money responsibly to make decisions that benefit the UK, its citizens, and its future.

The Labour Party has "robbed" pensioners after they lost £300 in Winter Fuel Payments. MPs have voted to remove the Winter Fuel Allowance from all but the poorest pensioners in England and Wales. However, reports suggest that even those claims may take up to four years to come to fruition. Such actions have left many pensioners feeling as though they are being penalised for working their entire lives.

Labour voters themselves have slammed Sir Keir Starmer’s Winter Fuel Payment cut in damning new polling. A snap study by JL Partners revealed that even Labour supporters are outraged by the decision, with one calling the policy “scandalous and mean.”

There is a sense that this policy is far too heavy-handed, that the move is unfair and punitively targets some of the most vulnerable in society, and it has provoked an emotional response from many. Even if there is support for cuts in principle, most feel that there must be a better way than cutting the Winter Fuel Payment. There is a perception that the economy is in a poor state as a result of Labour's public sector pay increases, asylum costs, and additional support for Ukraine etc. The belief that cuts have to start somewhere persists, but there is a desire for the government to look at other failing systems that can be reformed. Voters of all ages and across the political spectrum are worried that this move will lead to many pensioners suffering, without Keir Starmer showing much regard for the country’s vulnerable members of society.

This allowance is a vital lifeline for many elderly and vulnerable citizens, helping them stay warm during the colder months. By voting to reduce or eliminate this benefit, these MPs have contributed to the financial strain and hardship experienced by those who rely on this support.

It is only fair that MPs who impose financial restrictions on the public should not be able to benefit from public funds for their housing and utility expenses. This petition aims to bring about equality and accountability within our political system, ensuring that MPs are not insulated from the same sacrifices they impose on others.

We urge the government to introduce legislation that will:

- Prohibit MPs who supported cuts to the Winter Fuel Allowance from claiming utility expenses (gas, electricity, water) for any of their properties, whether first or second homes.

- Ensure that MPs are held to the same financial standards as their constituents, especially those most affected by these cuts.

- Promote fairness and transparency in the use of taxpayer money by elected officials.

I ask every taxpayer, every pensioner, and every person who has paid into this system with loved ones who aren’t getting any younger to stand up for what is right. Share this petition and let Parliament know that we, the taxpayers, pay your wages. We should have a say in how you are paid because the government works for the people on behalf of the people.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more just and equitable political system that prioritizes the well-being of the most vulnerable in society.
