Lower parking rates and provide free parking in Orillia
The Issue
Downtown Orillia has always been a vibrant centre for business and community gatherings. The local shops and cafes were once bustling with customers, creating a lively atmosphere that drew people from all around. Huge increases in parking rates in 2023 have significantly impacted the traffic to this beloved area, with higher fees at parking meters discouraging both residents and visitors from spending time downtown.
Business owners, including myself, have witnessed the devastating effects on our livelihoods as fewer customers choose to stop by. The streets are noticeably quieter, and the loss of foot traffic has led to decreased sales and, for some, the heart-wrenching decision to close their doors for good. For a town like Orillia, whose identity is so closely tied to its heritage downtown and its local businesses, this is not just an economic issue but a community one as well.
To revitalize our downtown core, we must address the prohibitive cost of parking. I propose two simple yet effective solutions: lower the parking rates at meters to encourage more visitors, and provide free gated parking in Lot #1. By reducing these financial barriers, we can draw in more foot traffic, support local businesses, and restore the vibrancy of downtown Orillia.
There are successful models in similar towns where affordable parking has improved business conditions significantly. Cities that have reduced parking fees and added free parking options report increased patronage and a healthier, more sustainable business environment.
We urge city council now and candidates in this year's municipal election to consider the long-term benefits of these changes. By signing this petition, you support a future where downtown Orillia thrives once more, business owners regain hope, and our community gathers freely and frequently in a bustling, welcoming environment.
Let's make downtown Orillia a vibrant hub once again. Please sign to support this crucial change.
