Let's Build "Oneonta Pump Track" in Neahwa Park And Rebuild The Skate Park
The Issue
Central New York needs Pump Tracks and Neahwa Park is the perfect place for one! Please sign this petition to let the town and park officials know there's a need for one.
NEAHWA SKATE PARK
Oneonta's, Neahwa Park was one of the first parks in Central New York to build a concrete skate park. But now with the rise in new skate facilities being built in some of the surrounding cities and the very poor condition that Neahwa's skatepark is currently in, it's time for Oneonta to catch up and build an amazing facility for all wheeled sports.
SKATE PARK WITH A SURROUNDING PUMP TRACK
I see many kids and adults in the community who are deprived of a safe, progressive space to engage in wheeled sports like BMX, MTB, scooter, surf skate, inline skate, etc. These sports are more than just a hobby - They're a passion, lifestyle and a culture. And yet, despite the ever-growing interest in recreational wheeled sport activity, Oneonta still lacks the important asset of safe, designated places where wheeled sport enthusiast can play, socialize and hone their skills.
Gone are the days of "Skate Only" facilities. Inclusivity is the path that cities are taking to embrace all wheeled sport enthusiast. A world class pump track and world class skatepark meets those needs and will have people coming back time and time again.
A paved asphalt pump track would mean the world to children, teenagers, and adults who are involved in wheeled sports. Imagine Neahwa Park, already a popular destination for skateboarders, being complemented by a pump track which would create a more inclusive space for the rest of the wheeled sport enthusiast that come to the park. Families would be introduced to a new type of playground, and people would have a designated space to build their skills, have fun, and even prepare for potential wheeled sports careers.
HEALTH BENEFITS:
Studies show that providing communal sports facilities can have a remarkable impact on public health and social cohesion. The Health Equity and Active Transportation report states that public investment in active transport resources, such as pump tracks, contributes to a reduction in chronic diseases and improves mental health overall (Health Equity and Active Transportation Report, 2019).
ECONOMICAL BENEFITS:
Something that may come as a surprise is the economic benefits of a pump track. City's and towns that invest in pump tracks and bike parks consistently report ensuing revenue that improves the bottom line for the region.
Some of the reasons pump tracks increase spending are intuitive. More money is spent at nearby restaurants, stores, bike shops, hotels and motels. A pump track is a unique amenity that differentiates itself from other wheeled sport facilities making it a destination for enthusiast.
Therefore, we urge the Oneonta officials to renovate the skate park and build a paved asphalt pump track in Neahwa. Doing so will affirm the city's commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and promoting sports and health for all its residents.
