Review how missing person cases are handled by Police Forces across the country.

The Issue

In the UK, approximately 170,000 people are reported missing each year. Sadly, many families feel unsupported by police forces across the country and are calling on the government to review how missing person cases are handled. Such a review could help provide the answers for these families.

One recurring theme in my conversations with these families is the inconsistency in police support. While some receive good assistance, the majority are left feeling helpless, often having to search on their own or rely on external agencies - costs that are usually borne by the families themselves or through public donations. This situation must change. Far too many families are left without answers, and the system needs to do better to support them.

Joseph Bellamy went Missing in Bristol recently, and his aunty has signed and commented on:

“My beautiful nephew Joseph went missing on 3rd December 2024. The support my sister has received from the police has been inconsistent and at times, really unacceptable. The officers on the day he went missing were excellent, but other than that, I have been appalled by the communication side.

They have made false promises and she has had to phone for follow ups. They also arrived at her house unannounced to give information that should have been over the phone (when of course you expect the worst to see police).

But have also given worse news over the phone! Just feels like the left arm has no idea what the right arm is doing. Better follow up support and consistent people dealing with these cases too - so you don’t have to explain from scratch whenever there’s a need to get in touch. It’s so sad that so many people are going missing but made sadder that this is the support they can expect”.

The goal of the petition;

We need to bring this to the attention of the UK Ministers of State responsible for policing, urging them to review and improve the handling and support provided for missing persons cases.
