The Issue

As a neurodivergent individual, I have firsthand experience of the challenges faced in environments that are not accommodating to sensory needs. The hustle and bustle of medium and large workplaces and shops can be overwhelming, leading to anxiety, stress, and reduced productivity for people like me. This is a daily reality that many neurodivergent individuals face, affecting our ability to work effectively and engage in necessary activities like shopping.

The UK government has an opportunity to make a significant and positive change by requiring sensory rooms in medium and large workplaces and shops. A sensory room offers a therapeutic space designed to promote calmness, focus, and clarity through soothing sensory experiences. This adjustment not only helps neurodivergent individuals but also enhances overall employee well-being and satisfaction, potentially leading to improved productivity and morale.

It's not just about accessibility; it’s about inclusion and acknowledgment of diverse needs within our society. According to a study by the National Autistic Society, over 700,000 people in the UK are on the autism spectrum, and many more have sensory processing issues associated with other neurodivergencies. This means a large portion of our population encounters barriers in everyday situations that could be alleviated with sensory rooms as standard practice.

Concrete and actionable solutions exist. The UK government could implement a national law that mandates sensory rooms as a reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act 2010. This measure would align with existing disability rights legislation and further demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and equitable opportunities for all individuals.

Further evidence of the impact of sensory-friendly spaces comes from global corporations that have already invested in sensory rooms, noting significant improvements in employee engagement and customer satisfaction. Clearly, the benefits extend beyond just the neurodivergent community to create a more welcoming environment for everyone.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a future where workplaces and shops acknowledge and embrace neurodiversity. Let us urge the UK government to act on this crucial issue and help foster an inclusive, understanding, and supportive community. Sign now to advocate for sensory rooms in our workplaces and shops!
