JusticeforKeren: What happened to my daughter at Premiere Academy
The Issue
My daughter was bullied to silence till she died, I will not be silenced.
My daughter Keren-Happuch Aondodoo Akpagher, a student of Premiere Academy Lugbe, Abuja died on the 22nd of June 2021 due to hyperglycemia triggered by sepsis caused by an infection which was as a result of a condom left in her vagina by her rapist whilst in Premiere Academy Lugbe, Abuja boarding house.
The school has refused to disclose what TRULY happened before she died and they have refused to release the CCTV footage of the 13th - 17th of June, 2021 as directed by the DCP Gender Unit of the FCIID claiming their footage is programmed to delete after 30 days. The school has 54 CCTV installed on its grounds for security purposes and this footage will help shed light on what happened to my daughter.
However, despite this claim, they interestingly released footage of 19th June 2021 when she was walking out of the school. Releasing the CCTV footages from the other days, we believe, holds the key to unraveling all that happened that led to her death.
My daughter’s reaction as well as information and statements from some staff and caregivers who were aware of her being molested prove that my Keren was raped and molested but pressured not to share it. Chiefly being that the school refused to release her to me when my daughter placed a distress call that I should come and pick from the school. She also told me that “you don't know why I want to go home” after the school initially turned me back when I tried to pick her up the first time.
Also, the nurse that attended to Keren when she reported that she was sick at the school clinic resigned within the week she died and her house mother told me that Keren was not able to work to her classes and had to be assisted by her friends on the 16th of June 2021.
Instead of fishing out the culprit who molested my daughter in nearly 10 months since my precious daughter died, the school has filed a petition against me and sued child rights campaigner, Lemmy Ughegbe citing Defamation and Provocation of Premiere Academy. They have done everything to discredit, mar my family name and the memory of my daughter.
But thanks to the House of Reps member, Hon. Mark Gbillah who raised a motion on Keren’s death last year, the house has resolved to constitute a panel that will address the issue via a public hearing. However, 136 days after this resolution was passed, nothing has been done about it - I know a panel has been constituted but they have not started any work concerning my daughter’s death.
The Ministries of Women Affairs and Education whose primary responsibility is to protect the Nigerian child and places of education have been silent over this issue but I will not stop till the culprit and the perpetrators who covered up her rape are brought to justice.
Sign this petition calling on the authorities of Premier Academy to:
- Provide the CCTV footage of 13th to 18th June 2021 that shows all that happened to Keren during those days.
- Provide records of medication that was administered to Keren when she reported sick at the school clinic.
- Avail themselves for DNA Testing (including all the males that have unfettered access to the school premises. They have tried all they can to intimidate me but I will tell the world the truth and get JUSTICE for Keren and other victims of abuse in Nigeria’s boarding schools.
Sign this petition to help me get the attention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamiala to wade into this matter.
Thank you
Keren’s mother
