The Issue

I've always believed that workers who receive congruity tips, whether they are from the hospitality, service, or any other industry, deserve to keep every penny they earn from their hard work. For many people in these industries, tips form a significant portion of their income, and it is only fair that they should not be subjected to tax deductions on these earnings.

In the UK, millions of workers in various sectors rely on tips to make ends meet, often using them to cover basic living expenses. These tips are a direct reward for their dedication and hard work, reflecting appreciation from the customers they serve diligently. Yet, under the current tax law, these gratuities are not tax-exempt, meaning workers lose a portion of this well-earned income to taxes.

According to HM Revenue and Customs, all tips are taxable, and this means that a substantial part of the income meant to reward and support workers is lost. Workers should not have to worry about losing their deserved tips to taxes; they should be able to use these funds to better their lives, support their families, or invest in their futures.

Other countries have already moved to make tips tax-free, recognizing the significance of preserving this income for workers. The UK government should follow suit and amend the current tax regulations. By doing so, they would be acknowledging the critical role that tips play in the livelihoods of countless UK workers and the industries they uplift.

I urge you to sign this petition and call on the UK government to make congruity tips tax-free, allowing workers to fully benefit from their dedication and hard work. Together, we can drive change and support the workforce who depend on these earnings to thrive.
