The Issue

As a mother of four and a birth and postpartum doula, my journey has been profoundly shaped by the need for comprehensive maternal care, a realization that dawned on me through my own experiences. Following 17 years of dedicated military service, my family and I frequently relocated, often finding ourselves in remote areas where access to doulas and midwives was scarce. The absence of nearby family support compounded the challenges, leading to episodes of postpartum anxiety and depression that could have been alleviated with better prenatal and postpartum care.

Doulas provide invaluable support to families across Canada, not just during childbirth but in the crucial postpartum period as well. They offer not only physical and emotional support but also guidance in navigating the sometimes overwhelming world of newborn care. The presence of a doula can be transformative, significantly improving maternal mental health and birth outcomes. Studies have shown that doula support can lead to a 39% reduction in the risk of Cesarean sections and an increase in overall maternal satisfaction, underscoring the critical role they play in maternal healthcare.

Yet, despite their significance, many Canadian families are unable to access these services due to the prohibitive costs associated with hiring a doula. This financial barrier persists primarily because doulas are not universally recognized by provincial or private insurance plans, leaving families to shoulder these costs out of pocket.

To rectify this disparity and ensure equitable access to doula care for all families, we must demand that all Canadian provincial and territorial governments, alongside private insurers, include doula services in their coverage. By doing so, we would not only provide familial support but also contribute to improved maternal and child health outcomes on a national scale. This investment in doula care would be a forward-thinking move towards an inclusive and comprehensive healthcare system for all Canadian families.

Join me in urging the necessary stakeholders to take action and include doula care in insurance plans. Together, we can make sure every family has the option of enhanced, accessible care during one of life's most critical journeys. Please sign this petition to bring about much-needed change for Canadian families.
