Amend GA Senate Bill 244 for fair compensation

The Issue

In 2022, I was wrongfully arrested and charged for a crime I did not commit in Fulton County, Georgia. Even though I was innocent, the ordeal cost me $10,000 in attorney fees, $4,500 for bail, and I endured three grueling months in jail. Ultimately, the charges were dismissed when evidence of my innocence surfaced. However, to this day, I have not received any compensation, nor even an apology, from the state. My story is not unique; many others have faced similar injustices due to systemic flaws in Georgia’s legislation.

We are calling for an amendment to GA Senate Bill 244 to ensure that individuals who are charged with a crime, arrested, and subsequently have their charges dismissed, receive appropriate compensation. The current legal framework fails to address the financial and emotional toll on innocent individuals who, despite being exonerated, carry the heavy burden of legal fees, lost wages, and emotional distress.

Consider these facts: according to the Innocence Project, over 2,700 innocent Americans have been exonerated since 1989. Many of these individuals had to fight long and hard for any form of restitution or acknowledgment from the state for wrongful charges. While states like Texas and Illinois have already enacted laws to compensate wrongfully accused individuals, Georgia lags behind.

By amending GA Senate Bill 244, Georgia can take a bold and necessary step to rectify this injustice. The proposed amendment should include provisions for reimbursing legal fees, bail, compensation for lost wages, and emotional distress for those whose cases are dismissed. This not only serves justice but also acts as a deterrent against presumptive arrests, ensuring that innocent people are not caught in the gears of a flawed legal system.

Your support can push for legislative change, ensuring rightful compensation and justice for all wrongfully accused individuals in Georgia. Sign this petition to demand reform for a fairer, more just system.
