Help us, Help Youth Leaders Continue to Turn Nickel City Into Gold

The Issue

We are bringing attention to the critical situation facing Future North, a one-year-old charity organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of youth in the Sudbury-Manitoulin district.

Despite being in the early stages of our role as a charity, Future North has made a significant impact on the community since its inception as an initiative in 2020. As we approach the end of our 5-year funding cycle under the Tamarack Institute's Federal Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS) grant, which concludes on March 31, 2024, we find ourselves in urgent need of operational funding.

Youth engagement is central to our work as an organization. We co-create a brave space with youth to collaborate and lead system change efforts that reflect their perspectives and lived experience. Dedicated to enhancing opportunities for those aged 15 to 30 in Sudbury and Manitoulin, our 13-member Youth Expert Panel guides us.

Our results are substantial – supporting 16 youth with education credits, providing 13 internships at a livable wage, and fostering 10 youth-led projects. Notably, three Youth Expert Panel members now serve as directors. Engaging over 6,500 youth, we amplify their voices on crucial issues and have forged 120 vital partnerships.

Endorsements from community organizations, youth, and families highlight Future North's distinctive impact. We address crucial gaps and champion youth leadership. Our recent recognition with the MPP’s Sudbury Good Neighbours Award, based on a youth's nomination, attests to our impactful efforts. We have been long recognized by youth for our authentic support and advocacy. For doing the work alongside them, and not “for them”. We are guided by the statement “Nothing about us, without us”.

However, despite tireless fundraising, revenue diversification, and the pursuit of eligible grants, we encounter systemic challenges that warrant further discussion. Immediate action is vital to uphold the confidence youth have in the Provincial system for their well-being and future. We earnestly urge the province to invest in the youth's future by supporting Future North.

Your support will empower us to sustain our crucial work, ensuring a brighter future for Sudbury-Manitoulin's youth. We appreciate your attention to this matter; please sign this petition if you believe in a a community where youth are engaged, supported, and valued in education, health care, employment, and all areas of their well-being.
