The Issue

Please take a moment to sign this most important petition of Faith Leaders who endorse Brandon Johnson for Mayor of Chicago.

By Pastor Dr. Walter A. McCray

As of 3/22/23, this endorsement has the signatures of over 325 Pastors and ministers, and the number is growing daily. You should sign your name to become a vital part of this historic moment and movement. Election day in Chicago is April 4th. Remember that April 4, 1968, is the day an assassin’s bullet took the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—a drum major for justice, human dignity, equality, freedom, empowerment, and voting rights! Let’s honor Rev. Dr. King by voting for Brandon Johnson as Chicago mayor!

Here's what happened. On March 17, 2023, a broad constituency of faith leaders from Chicago gave their endorsement to Commissioner Brandon Johnson in his bid to become Chicago’s next mayor. Their clarion statement is to the point. Johnson is progressive, and his candidacy has captured the support of progressive-minded voters. These are Chicagoans who desire and dare to change the city's politics and move its administration forward in true peacemaking directives.

A critical choice is on the table. Chicago’s two mayoral candidates are at opposite ends of the spectrum. One stands for big-stick policing, and the other is a true peacemaker. A crossroad faces violence-plagued Chicago. Our needs are safety, security, and well-being for all our citizens. Brandon stands for improving the quality of life for all Chicago, and especially for Chicago’s poor and under-served communities on the city’s South and West sides. Brandon Johnson stands for economic empowerment and in the historic tradition that advances the struggle for freedom, self-determination, and justice.

Chicago desperately needs the leadership of progressive Brandon Johnson—especially in the climate of anti-democracy and right-wing political practices that are turning back the clock on progressive gains, educational truth, and justice issues. Warning: some advocates of right-wing politics have comfortably embraced the candidacy of Brandon’s opponent, Paul Vallas.

Brandon Johnson needs your support right now! He needs both local and national support. This petition is for people of faith in Chicago and in many other places of our nation. What happens in Chicago impacts its suburbs and the State of Illinois. The things that happen in Chicago have far-reaching repercussions for cities and communities across the nation. We must stand together to check the anti-democracy spirit spreading across the nation—especially in Chicago and Illinois, which are politically blue, not red.

Our appeal is to all citizens of goodwill: we ask you to join and count yourself with progressive faith leaders by signing your name and spreading the word to others you influence.

You will not regret your choice for Chicago’s next Mayor, Brandon Johnson. Sign with faith leaders for progressive change and freedom.

In advance, thank you for your prayers and support!
