Hold Fairfax County Public Schools Accountable for Educating our Kids During Pandemic

Hold Fairfax County Public Schools Accountable for Educating our Kids During Pandemic
The Issue
UPDATED: April 15, 2020
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION BELOW IF YOU ARE DISAPPOINTED IN HOW FAIRFAX COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS (FCPS) LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION HAVE HANDLED THE TASK OF EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN SINCE THE MARCH 13 SHUTDOWN.
We are asking for a full independent audit of what has happened since the shutdown. Every decision, action, and preparation should be analyzed. Every outbound communication should be assessed for transparency and truthfulness. (NEW)
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) closed on Friday, March 13, 2020, as did many other schools across the area and nation.
Online teaching, or "distance learning" was slated to begin on Tuesday, April 14.
However, as we have seen, compared to nearby schools systems, the FCPS month-long rollout has been less than satisfactory. THIS PETITION IS NOT ABOUT BLAMING THE TEACHERS.
What is lacking here is leadership.
Fairfax County, the 10th largest in the country, has not produced a product that has been up to the standards we expect from a school that is supposed to be one of the best in the nation.
How could problems not be anticipated? If the packets being mailed home are not customized for each child anyway, why couldn't those have started weeks ago? Why didn't leadership think to test the bandwidth and security of the online system with the staff (of which there are 12,000 who could have been volunteer testers)? Why did they not look to other local colleges and schools who have rolled out online teaching to equal size student populations in recent weeks?
This lack of leadership, planning, and foresight must be addressed.
We deserve a better product than this. Fairfax County spends $15,000 per student and has an overall budget of $3 Billion.
