Maine is an aging state and, statistically, we have the oldest population in the US. In order for Maine to thrive, we need a concerted effort to keep young people in Maine as well as to provide an opportunity for young people to call Maine home. To have the most impact, we need a structural and permanent vehicle for young people to be represented in all aspects of policy-making. This bill will establish a permanent commission by and for young people. It is the commission’s duty to ensure that young people from all corners of the state have a prosperous, sustainable and secure future in Maine.

The commission shall promote, coordinate and implement programs designed to improve opportunities for young people in the state. The establishment of the commission will ensure that Maine has a vibrant future where young people play a crucial role in Maine’s economic, social and political life.

The mission is two fold: One is to make sure that critical data is collected and used to directly inform policy makers about the issues impacting young people in Maine. The second is to assure that youth advocates and organizations have a direct and coordinated access point to policy makers and government.

The commission’s work will expand democratic processes and will also serve to educate youth on how to write or interpret legislative policy. It’s composition will include a wide spectrum of young people and provide a space where our voices are consistently recognized and represented.
