Demand Global Laws to End Child Trafficking

Demand Global Laws to End Child Trafficking
The Issue
As a survivor of child human trafficking, I know firsthand the immense pain that victims endure. The trauma is not just physical—it impacts every aspect of a person’s life, including their emotional well-being, relationships, and future. This is a horrifying and life-altering experience that far too many children face worldwide. It’s a reality that’s far too often ignored or minimized, and it’s time to speak up and demand change.
My story began when I was an innocent, hopeful child in the sixth grade. I was in intermediate school in the United States, a place that should have been a safe environment for me to learn and grow. Instead, it became the very place where I was exploited and trafficked. The trafficking started through my school system—an institution that should have protected me, but instead, became the gateway for my pain.
At that time, I was struggling with feeling lost in my family. My nephew had just been born, and I was no longer the baby of the house. I began to feel isolated and alone. I confided in my band director, who I thought was someone I could trust, and admitted that I didn’t feel loved at home. This was a vulnerable moment, one that I mistakenly thought would lead to support and understanding. But instead, my vulnerability was exploited.
The first red flags appeared through inappropriate comments and actions from the band director’s assistant. He made me feel uncomfortable, at times putting his hand on my knee, and said things that were unsettling. I complained to my family, and they supported me, standing up for me as they should have. However, the situation escalated. I was tricked into staying late after school one day. It was then that the trafficking began, and my world was turned upside down. I was manipulated, coerced, and made to feel as though I had no other option.
The effects of this traumatic experience have been far-reaching and devastating. On a mental and emotional level, I have been forever changed. I suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and depression, all stemming from the violence and betrayal I endured. In addition to the emotional scars, the physical consequences have been just as painful. Because of the abuse I experienced, I now face female health issues that prevent me from having children—a heartbreaking and lasting effect of the trafficking that no child should ever face.
The impact on my social life and relationships has been equally profound. It has been incredibly difficult to maintain healthy relationships with family and friends. Trust has been shattered, and my connections with others have suffered. The emotional toll has been significant, and it has left me with a sense of isolation that I still struggle with to this day.
The emotional scars didn’t just affect my relationships—it also disrupted my education. My experiences with trafficking made it incredibly hard to focus on my studies, and as a result, my future opportunities were compromised. I was unable to fully engage in my education, which ultimately led to setbacks in my post-high school academic journey.
As a survivor, the road to recovery has been long, difficult, and often isolating. While I was able to find support in local women’s groups for survivors of domestic violence and trauma, the recovery process has not been quick or easy. I have learned that healing takes time, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for trauma recovery. The road to recovery has been steady, but it continues, and I’ve learned to take it one day at a time.
What motivated me to take action and become an advocate for survivors of child trafficking was a conversation with my mother. I realized that silence in the face of this atrocity wasn’t an option. My inaction wasn’t selfish—it was a missed opportunity to use my voice for change. I realized that by speaking out and sharing my story, I could help others who have experienced the same horrors, and I could be part of a larger movement to end this atrocity once and for all.
I am now committed to advocating for stronger, more effective laws that not only punish traffickers but also prevent future victims. Traffickers should face life imprisonment or, in the most extreme cases, the death penalty. Child trafficking is an unspeakable crime, and it deserves a response that is just as serious.
We must also do more to prevent trafficking and protect vulnerable children before they fall victim. This includes stronger legislation to safeguard children in schools and other spaces where they should feel safe. More needs to be done to educate children and their families on the dangers of trafficking, and there needs to be a widespread effort to detect and address trafficking before it occurs.
Additionally, survivors need support—not just after the trauma, but throughout their recovery. While I was able to find some help through support groups, there is a desperate need for more resources and services that can assist survivors in rebuilding their lives. Trauma-informed care, educational assistance, legal aid, and mental health services should be readily available to anyone who has been affected by human trafficking.
By signing this petition, you will be joining a movement to demand justice, accountability, and stronger laws to protect children everywhere. I hope that by sharing my story, I can help others see the horrific, lasting effects of trafficking and inspire real change.
Together, we can make a difference. We can ensure that no child ever has to go through what I endured. We can create a world where traffickers are punished to the fullest extent of the law, and survivors receive the support and justice they deserve. Please, take a stand with me today.
Let’s demand a world where children are protected, where justice is served, and where trafficking is eradicated once and for all.
