My dog Lucy was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a devastating condition similar to human ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. This heart-wrenching discovery led to immense emotional and financial strain, both of which could potentially have been avoided if the breeder had conducted genetic testing before selling puppies.

I will never regret having my best friend in my life for the past 9 years and hopefully more to come. Lucy and I fortunate enough that I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and can help attend to her needs and rehabilitation along with my wonderful fiancee. Within the next year my dog will slowly lose her independence needing a wheelchair and the use of her hind legs with potential for ascending paralysis in her trunk and front limbs. This disease is not curable and luckily not painful for the dogs but definitely for their humans. Unfortunately, stories like mine are far too common, as many families unknowingly bring home dogs with significant health risks. 

This is why I am appealing to Governor Healey and the esteemed members of the Massachusetts Legislature to consider legislation that mandates genetic health transparency in dog breeding. Such a law would require breeders to provide the results of available genetic health tests and disclose any known inherited disease risks before selling puppies to stores and individuals buyers

Currently, many pet buyers are unaware of the potential genetic health issues their new family member might possess until it is too late. According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are approximately 10,000 puppy mills in the country, many of which lack adequate oversight regarding the health screening of dogs. This contributes to the spread of hereditary diseases, causing unnecessary suffering for pets and distress for families.

Implementing a policy of required genetic transparency would serve as a vital consumer protection measure, mitigating the risk of unexpected health issues and fostering more responsible practices among breeders. It would empower prospective dog owners with the information necessary to make informed decisions, ensuring that they welcome a truly healthy companion into their homes.

Furthermore, authorities could establish a centralized database where breeders must submit their genetic testing results, accessible to potential buyers for verification. This measure would create accountability, discourage unethical breeding practices, and promote the overall health and well-being of pets across Massachusetts. I ask the state of Massachusetts to be the first state to adopt this and set a good example in hopes that this will become a reality for us nationally.
