The Issue

Please join concerned residents of Vancouver-Quilchena in calling for MLA Dallas Brodie to resign from the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Brodie was elected as a member of the Conservative Party, but on March 7, 2025, she was ousted from the caucus after giving an interview mocking testimony from survivors of residential schools. There is no place for residential school denialism in the BC Legislature.

In a statement, BC Conservative Leader John Rustad said: “As a result of her decision to publicly mock and belittle testimony from former residential school students, including by mimicking individuals recounting stories of abuses — including child sex abuse, MLA Brodie is not welcome to return to our Conservative Party of B.C. Caucus.”

In the weeks prior to these actions, Brodie posted several statements online questioning information from the Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc Nation about graves found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School; concerningly, this behaviour has continued after her removal from the Conservative caucus.

In a release concerning these online comments on March 6, Walter Mineault, President, Métis Nation British Columbia said: “Comments like these and disingenuous behavior by an elected official, have no place in our public discourse. The Indian Residential Schools destroyed our people. We suffered loss, we were disconnected to being Indigenous and we were left to rebuild. Now we are told by people like Ms. Brodie that it was not so bad. That we made up what happened, or our losses were not real. This is wrong and I will not listen to people who spread this misinformation. I will always stand up against them.”

We, the undersigned, have two concerns:

  1. The truth of the horrors and ongoing impacts of the residential school system is widely accepted in Canada. This is outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report, which is described as “a testament to the courage of each and every Survivor and family member who shared their story.” Brodie refers to truth and reconciliation efforts as “the multi-billion-dollar reconciliation industry” and claims that they transfer B.C.’s “wealth and power” to “an elite racial minority.” Her claims are indisputably wrong- both ethically and historically. A person with these views does not belong in the BC Legislature.
  2. The constituents of Vancouver-Quilchena did not vote for MLA Brodie as an Independent (or member of OneBC). Her choice to engage in behaviour that led to her removal from the Conservative caucus negatively impacts her ability to effectively represent her riding. Residents of this riding should have an opportunity to choose an MLA who reflects the values and priorities of the community. The recall process is not possible until 18 months after the October 2024 election, so the only way this can happen is if MLA Brodie resigns.

Vancouver-Quilchena is a diverse community of people who care for each other and for the residential school survivors and families of survivors who live in our riding. MLA Brodie’s recent behaviour does not reflect the values of this riding. She must resign.
