UPDATE: SFU Recreation has published updates to their social media and website in response to our message, as well as email members and recent pass holders. The message is that the climbing wall will be undergoing temporary closure due to the ongoing facility renovations. The climbing wall is NOT located in the areas undergoing renovation. Yet, as climbing is not a service included in student activity fees, it has been slated as the lowest priority and closed. These renovations have been in progress for the past 6 months and the climbing wall has been successfully sharing the space with other programs. With the closure of the pool during these renovations, it is incomprehensible as to why SFU would choose to shutter another facility.

------------

The climbing wall at Simon Fraser University has been a cherished facility for many years. It has provided a space for both students and community climbers to engage in physical activity, learn new skills, and foster a sense of community. However, during the Fall 2023 semester break SFU Student Services made the decision to close the Climbing Wall. To date, there has been no public statement on the closure, nor have the students been given an opportunity to provide their input.

Opened in 2017, the Climbing Wall has become a university staple and an attraction to new students. The closure of the climbing wall has left a void in our community that cannot be filled by other facilities or activities. We believe that its re-establishment will greatly benefit our students' physical and mental well-being.

We call upon SFU Student Services, and SFU Athletics and Recreation to reconsider their decision and work towards reopening this vital facility as soon as possible. Please sign this petition if you support the re-establishment of our beloved climbing wall at Simon Fraser University.
