Designate October as Appalachian History Month

Designate October as Appalachian History Month
The Issue
Growing up in Appalachia, I was unaware that I had a culture. Like many, my understanding of "Appalachian" was limited to the trail that meandered through Harper's Ferry. Yet, our heritage is so much more than a footpath stretching across the mountains. It encompasses the history of coal mining, the invention of the pit stop, the labor rights movement, our indelible imprint on the world of bluegrass music, and the relationship we share with the land itself.
In 2025, Boone, NC set a precedent by naming October as Appalachian History Month, acknowledging the unique culture and history that defines us. In 2023, an Appalachian flag was proudly created, emblazoned with blue, yellow, and green hues and adorned with the quilting star; a symbol of our unity and strength. It is time for the entire Appalachian region to honor and celebrate our shared heritage, not just within isolated pockets but as a united cultural community.
This petition calls upon the governor of West Virginia and the Mayor of Martinsburg, WV, to officially recognize October as Appalachian History Month. Such a designation would not only preserve our cultural legacy for future generations but also empower us as Appalachians to speak about our invaluable contributions to art, music, and the environment.
Our history is our power, and it's time we assert that power by standing together. By signing this petition, you contribute to a larger movement aiming to honor our history, celebrate our achievements, and project our voices. Embrace our heritage, and help make Appalachian History Month a reality across the region. Please sign and support this call to action.
