I am not a teacher, but a parent. I have not been threatened per se by the EWA board and current superintendent, but I run the East Wake Academy Parent Resources page on Facebook and they have tried on multiple occasions to shut this parent page down. They simply don’t want parents to have an outlet to discuss the school that isn’t 100% monitored by them. They have contacted Facebook to close our page, unsuccessfully in the past, but because we are not directly related or affiliated with the school and have only a tangential relationship, in that we all have children that go to the school, they were not able to shut it down. Which is great because it is a great resource for parents if they need uniforms, help with carpool, general questions etc. They have tried setting up a separate page, unsuccessfully, that was school-controlled but parents wanted a free outlet to be able to discuss school issues without teachers and the superintendent spying on everything that was going on. The latest hubbub is where the EWA PTA is now being shut down. The school set up a “Foundation” for donations that they can control and manage. THIS IS A HORRIBLE IDEA. Parent oversight on the PTA helps with checks and balances to make sure that the events and items that are funded by the PTA actually go to the events and not a “slush fund” for the current administration to use at their discretion. The school gets federal money for the education portion of the school, but many of the sports, events, and fun stuff about EWA is funded through the PTA. We have in the past had to make “voluntary” cash donations to the school. This would then be controlled by the school with no parent interaction or vote as to where the money is to be spent. This current administration (specifically the Superintendent, Mr. Pirello) is trying to create a dictatorship out of the school with no parent interaction at all. This speaks to cover ups, shady dealings, and control over the money that comes into the school. NONE OF WHICH IS A GOOD IDEA. When anyone speaks out against the rules or changes at EWA, they get FIRED. In December they fired a well-loved Principal for the High School without notice or provocation. Mr. Johnson helped my son graduate early and go into the military which has been his dream since he was 9 years old. Mr. Johnson signed my son’s diploma and had it ready for his early graduation in December. When Mr. Johnson was fired without cause in December, they threw away my son’s diploma saying that he will have to wait until May to get another one. This is just one example of the inconsiderate and outrageous things this administration has been able to do because there is no oversight on a State Level on Charter school boards. I hope you do something with this petition, it will show the public the rotten apple core behind the rosy, red veneer that they try to portray to the public to get people to send their kids to the school. We have been there since my kids were in Kindergarten, and I am beyond thankful that next year will be our last year. This school needs serious scrutiny into why they are trying so hard to eliminate all parent participation. Is it to hide their scheming and stealing from the school? WHO KNOWS. But without parents having a voice or say in what goes on at the school it is fraught for disaster and mismanagement. I think it would be important for people to know that the school is trying to get rid of any parent involvement in the school, so that they can control the money and what events are allowed at the school.

I started my teaching career at EWA in 2023 under the current superintendent’s tenure. I moved to Zebulon and relocated my entire family with the intentions of staying at EWA as the middle school Spanish teacher for the foreseeable future. My plans quickly changed after I had an impromptu meeting with the current superintendent. During this meeting he raised his voice at me while his hands were shaking from frustration and conducted himself in a VERY ugly manner. I began to feel so uncomfortable that I started to look around the office in hopes that someone else would walk in to witness him. By the end of the meeting, I told him I was no longer returning the following year to teach at EWA. I immediately went to my principals office and broke down in tears and shock of what happened. After this event, he spoke very distastefully to another teacher near me. Exclaiming that no one was going to tell him what was happening in “his” organization. At this time I knew it was time to write a letter to the board. Many of my fellow teachers quietly thanked me (for fear of losing their jobs and becoming his next target). So I wrote the letter and sent it to every board member. The board explained that they were looking into it and I never heard from them again. Seeing this petition has made me realize that others are starting to see the need for a change. After my experience with the current superintendent, I will gladly support!

I no longer go to EWA and it’s truly sad to see it go downhill like this. The students, staff, and parents all deserve better than what they have been dealt

As an EWA alumni, it is very disheartening to hear all the negative things that have been happening. I grew up at this school and had a wonderful experience. It’s sad that my youngest brother was robbed of this experience. It’s sad to see all of the faculty that have left. I don’t hear anything good about this school since this new administration. Hope this change is made.

I am a current Junior at this school and a lot has changed in this school. The current administration has already taken away many traditions, like juniors rushing to the seniors seats at awards, and I whole heartedly believe that they will continue to take away these traditions until there is nothing left. I already did not like the administration after firing our old principal, who worked for the students and staff so that we could have a better experience, but these new changes have not helped. My grades have taken a hit because of the grading system, people are scared to speak out against admin with the thought of disciplinary action, and everyone just seems bleak as more and more rules are put in place. Another very big change was the tardy policy, where if you had 3 tardies you would have a lunch detention and the consequences only got worse from there. The tardy policy was somewhat lenient since I have been at this school, but now even upperclassmen are not getting any room to breathe. We know that we cannot get our old principal back, but we do not like having the things that we have appreciated and looked forward to being completely dissolved.

I’m a parent of an 11th grader who has attended EWA since 9th grade. There has been significant changes within the past 4 months that have negatively impacted the entire EWA community. It’s so disheartening to see the current Director make these decisions without considering the parents, students and staff. This should be an exciting time for my rising senior, but neither one of us are hopeful that this coming year will be a great year of learning and celebration for the future.

I'm a parent of a current 10th grader. I have seen what the current administrator has done to the moral of the teachers & students of this school. My student feels they can't be trusted, is a big bully, who doesn’t care about the feelings of each and every student. This person only wants the power, not what's best for the students & teachers. We need someone who really cares about each and every student & teacher!

There is no place in our schools - public, private or charter - for egos and agendas that aren’t fully committed to whole-child development. I’m not an EWA parent, but am horrified by the things I’ve heard from my friends who are. I’ve always thought so highly of EWA, and still do - but it’s very clear this current administration is staining and jeopardizing that reputation. And, at the cost of the students. I’m signing and standing in solidarity with the parents who have voiced legitimate concerns around the direction this institution is headed in.

As a parent of two alumni students of EWA I am disheartened at the current administration and what is going on at this once great school. Parent involvement should always be a #1 priority to keep things in check and have balance. Whoever this current superintendent is, needs to be fired or step down. He does not seem to represent the EWA spirit and the community the way it was the entire 13 years both of my kids attended from K-12. Get him out of there and get someone else in that cares about the staff, the children and their families the way they should!
