Truck stops serve as vital rest areas and convenience centers for truck drivers, offering fuel, food, and facilities for sleep. However, issues surrounding truck stops, such as environmental impact, safety concerns, and exploitation of drivers, have led to petitions advocating for change.
One petition seeks to address the environmental impact of truck stops by promoting sustainable practices and reducing emissions from idling trucks. Another petition highlights the safety risks faced by truck drivers at rest areas, calling for increased security measures to protect them from violence and theft.
By exploring the petitions under the topic of truck stops, you can support efforts to improve conditions for truck drivers and create a safer, more sustainable environment for all. Your support can make a difference in advocating for positive change within the trucking industry.

I have worked in the trucking industry for almost 25 years. While the industry is in critical need of safe parking for drivers delivering all the things we consume every single day, this Frenchtown exit is not the place. In addition to the many valid issues mentioned, a truck stop of this size would put so much strain on our small community. Safety and infrastructure (water, sewer, roads, garbage that doesn’t always make it into dumpsters, etc.) are just the start. The congestion and awkward intersection would be an almost immediate turnoff to most drivers and poses a huge safety risk to motorists and pedestrians. While I have the utmost respect for drivers, there are so many that do not play by the rules under a system that is horribly broken that any benefit this project would bring would be overshadowed by the downfall of issues it would bring. Town Pump is no doubt a good neighbor in the many communities it operates, the same cannot be universally said for all that frequent its locations. With proximity to schools and few amenities to tide over a DOT break or more, I oppose this project in this location.
Letter to Missoula County Commissioners
Subject: Strong Opposition to Proposed Truck Stop in Frenchtown, MT
Dear Missoula County Commissioners,
I strongly oppose the proposed truck stop development in Frenchtown. This is a horrible ideaone that
threatens the safety, values, and rural character of our community. Frenchtown is where we raise families,
enjoy peace, and cherish a slower way of life. A large truck stop risks destroying that.
I speak from experience. Having worked at truck stops for years, I witnessed a daily mix of drugs, violence,
prostitution, and theft. These arent anomaliesthey become criminal hubs, placing our neighborhoods and
especially schools at risk.
Criminal & Social Impacts:
- Harassment & Crime: A 2022 FMCSA survey found that 2330% of truckers reported harassment at truck
stopsverbal threats, physical assault, sexual misconductwith a shocking 33% of women reporting unwanted
touching.
- Trafficking & Safety: Truck stops are well-documented nodes for human trafficking, drug operations, and
violent incidents. Cargo theft and armed robberies at rest stops are increasingly common.
- Community Alarm: In Winchester, KY, residents fought a similar proposal, fearing increased crime, drugs,
trafficking, and disruption.
Property Values & Environmental Concerns:
- A study of California homes near freeways found that each 1% increase in truck traffic reduced nearby

property values by $2,0002,750 on a $420,000 homeeven at distances beyond 100 m.
- Facilities with idling trucks also bring noise, diesel fumes, pollution, and light intrusionsurveys have shown
these degrade neighborhood quality of life and lower property values.
Concerns Around Town Pump:
- Employee complaints on Indeed and Glassdoor emphasize mismanagement, low pay, poor treatment, and
zero bonuses.
- On Reddit, they were criticized for monopolizing liquor licenses and operating like casinos disguised as gas
stations, exploiting loopholes in Montanas laws.
- A reported incident in 2022 saw a Town Pump cashier refuse service to a girls basketball team in Conrad,
implicating poor customer relations and corporate negligence.
Zoning & Community Integrity:
The land in question has been farmland for as long as I can remember. Was it even zoned for commercial
use? If so, when was that decided and by whom?
Summary:
This is not just a business propositionits a threat to Frenchtowns safety, property values, rural identity, and
environmental health.
I urge all residents and commissioners: Oppose this truck stop proposal. Lets preserve the peaceful,
family-focused, rural community we love.

Frenchtown is where my family grew up, played, worked and went to school. This proposed truck center undoubtedly can easily disrupt the harmony and small town atmosphere the town is greatly known for. I am 100% opposed to the proposal and strongly urge the county and state leadership to block this proposal. As many state, the infrastructure is too constricted. Frenchtown Rural Fire would be too overwhelmed. Frenchtown School District buses passing by this property if allowed to pass would cause massive gridlock. The potential of high volume crime is too much for our community to handle. It's not worth the headache of paying the county additional taxes to have this gallish truck center come to fruit. We have much, much bigger issues in our state at this point in time. I would rather go to Love's or TA on Highway 10 than have one within eyesight of my father's backyard. This proposal cannot be allowed to move forward.
We lived in Frenchtown for 40 years and have seen the growth. There’s no reason to add a 5th big gas or truck station to an area that already has 2 gas stations and 4 large truck stops within a 10 mile radius!! That area is already congested and would cause additional traffic problems. This is a real safety hazard…
