Gender affirming care saved my son’s life. Before medical transition he often was too anxious to attend school and suffered from suicidal ideation, culminating in an attempt and admission to a pediatric psych ward. After years of HRT and counseling he was approved for top surgery at 16. The day of his surgery was like a rebirth! Finally comfortable in his own skin, his suicidal ideation went away completely and his confidence bloomed. Just month’s after his 18th birthday our state made it a felony to provide gender affirming care to minors. I would be a felon for supporting my son with the care that saved his life.

Gender affirming care for youth has been proven to help the mental and emotional health of said transgender youth. Anti trans laws increase the likelyhood of depression and other serious mental health issues in not only transgender people but also their loved ones and even the lgbtq+ community as a whole. The majority of people are not anti trans/lgbtq+. Oppression of transgender people and their right to access gender affirming care affects everyone who cares about transgender youth. If gender affirming care is blocked due to more anti trans bills being passed based on this report which contradicts valid medical science, suicide rates will go up as well as drug use and even pose a risk for more violent crimes. Including violent hate crimes against transgender youth, as well as the entire LGBTQ+ community ( due to bots being emboldened by anti trans/lgbtq legislation and politicians). And even violent crimes committed by trans/lgbtq+ youth/people who have become distressed and developed mental illness caused by long term discrimination and suffering.
