Expecting students to devote this kind of time to an internship is excessive. On top of it, there is little to no help in securing these internships and not all offer a meaningful learning experience. It's a case of looks good on paper but not so much in practice. It's also not right that too many students are in jeopardy of not graduating on time which can be a financial hardship for many.
Well I can start off and say that one credit for an internship that does not pay but also requires 120 hours to complete is ridiculous. I also think that they need to make credit hours more clear on their chart because I was really confused and this is my second year here as a transfer of my senior year. We should not have to work long hours from 6 to 7 hour shifts once a week to accommodate one credit knowing we have other responsibilities. Me personally I have no breaks my internships are on weekends and I work on weekends and go to class during the week. So like I been emphasizing this is RIDICULOUS. It should be 3 credits flat for an internship and that’s it. If we decide we want to take an internship to gain more experience that’s our business. We should not be delayed graduation because of something as simple as making an internship a flat out three credits.
It's not fair that the university's internship standard is 40 hours per credit, but ours is 120 per credit, and we are required to have 3 internship credits to graduate. They describe it to us like we're getting some amazing deal and that we should be thankful for their help because we're "getting so much experience for a better price", but in reality, we are not receiving the proper amount of credit for the amount of hours we worked. Think of it as being paid below the federal minimum wage. The current standard for internships in the music industry degree at SUNY Oneonta puts an immense burden on all of its students, because on top of all of this, you cannot begin to complete internships until you are at least a junior, most people cannot complete their internships during the semester due to the university's location and slim choosings online, and having to complete them over the summer often leads to many students graduating later than the usual four years, which will affect how their appear to employers in the job market. We, the student body of the music industry major, deserve better.
