Possom

The opossum is a medium-sized, cat-sized marsupial mammal native to the Americas, with the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) being the most common species in North America. Opossums are characterized by grey fur, a white face, a long hairless prehensile tail, and 50 teeth—more than any other North American land mammal. These solitary, nocturnal animals are found across diverse ecosystems, from tropical rainforests in South America to suburban areas in Canada, and have adapted successfully to various climates and human-modified environments.

Opossums play an important ecological role as scavengers and omnivores that consume carrion, insects, small animals, and vegetation, helping to control pest populations and clean up dead animals in their environments. As urban and suburban expansion increases human-wildlife overlap, opossums frequently encounter residential areas, where they seek shelter in attics, garages, and under porches, raising concerns about property access and disease transmission. Additionally, approximately 8.3 million opossums are killed annually by vehicles, making them a notable indicator of human-wildlife conflict and road safety issues.

Wildlife management and conservation efforts focus on humane exclusion techniques, habitat preservation, and public education to reduce negative human-opossum encounters. Rehabilitation centers and wildlife organizations work to treat injured opossums and address public misconceptions about the species, including the false belief that opossums hang from their tails or pose aggressive threats. Advocacy for wildlife-safe driving practices and the protection of natural corridors represents an emerging approach to reducing opossum mortality and supporting coexistence in shared spaces.
