Plastic pollution is a global environmental problem caused by the excessive production, use, and improper disposal of plastic materials. It leads to the accumulation of plastic waste in natural environments such as oceans, rivers, and landscapes, harming wildlife and ecosystems.

Companies contribute to plastic pollution primarily through the use of plastic packaging, bags, and single-use items like straws. Large corporations in retail and food industries produce vast amounts of plastic waste that often end up in the environment due to inadequate recycling and disposal practices.

Legislative measures such as the Plastic Pollution Reduction Act in California aim to limit the use of plastic products by enacting regulations that reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives. Such laws seek to hold manufacturers and consumers accountable for plastic pollution.

Corporate responsibility is crucial because many industries contribute significantly to plastic waste. Encouraging companies to reduce plastic usage and adopt environmentally friendly packaging can lead to substantial decreases in pollution and foster industry-wide changes that protect ecosystems and communities.

I have lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. Every weekend and most evenings after school, the Franklin field is filled with children and parents. It is a place where you can kick a ball at one end and do cartwheels on the other. There are always multiple activities at once. Douglas Park, the only neighborhood park, has a playground, a skateboard area, picnic tables and a duck pond. All are lovely (and being upgraded) but there is no real open green space to run around.
The new plans leave only a small, U10 sized soccer field of artificial grass. It will be a huge loss for this neighborhood if the Franklin yard is eliminated. We all choose to reside in Santa Monica because of the natural beauty. The City spends millions of dollars planting trees on every street. And now we are turning away from that because artificial fields are cheaper and easier to maintain? This makes no sense. There is a huge artificial soccer field at Lincoln (a few blocks away) where soccer is played every day. And at Samo. And Airport Park. The list goes on. Don't take away the only green space in our neighborhood.
Hello, board members: Please drop the notion of using artificial turf instead of natural grass at all schools in the SMMUSD. As a school nurse (veteran of SMMUSD!) I have also worked at a non-district local elementary school which subscribed to the allegedly cheaper artificial turf. The short-term result at that school was painful and infection-prone injuries to students who played and fell on the field. The harm to the environment from the artificial turf is ithe other strong deterrent to its use in our school district. Please be good citizens and child-supporters. Do not cut financial corners by resorting to faulty solutions. Support school health and safety by retaining nature's grass on lawns and playing fields.
Well maintained grass fields are very enjoyable for children and adults. Turf is the hotter, and tracking in plastic bits stuck to clothing are such a nuisance. Turf fields are also firmer, leading to more injuries (speaking from my experience playing on turf and grass fields for many years). Spend the money on routine field maintenance, and everyone will be happy! Fill the holes, level the field, reseed each year and as needed, fertilize regularly, and irrigate properly. Yes, grass maintenance costs money, but turf fields are expensive and considerably worse for enjoyment. Consider donations from the community if it helps cover the difference in cost.
Mine is a household of 3 people, 2 cats and a bird. In the past couple of weeks, we have accumulated between 30-45 plastic shopping bags. We “reuse” them as garbage bags but we don’t use them as quickly as we gain them, meaning they pile up in different parts of our house. It has been my experience that baggers at grocery stores do not pack efficiently enough to use fewer bags and if I request things to not be in bags or even if I bring my own bags, they’ll still insist on the plastic because “it’s their job to do it this way”. It shouldn’t be this way.
The trash along the MA highways are so much more visible and disturbing compared to neighboring states. The amount of trash is a clear sign of negligence from the government and local officials. Volunteer’s effort can only go so far. We need to take care of our environment, to make it healthier and more beautiful for communities and travelers to enjoy.
When I moved from a town to a city in MA, I was distressed to see not only cigarette butts, nips, and vape cartridges in city center, but also larger litter at every vacant lot, unoccupied turn in the road, and along the sides of busy highways. The most frequent items I find in the more scenic areas are large alcohol containers, Dunkin Donuts plastic and Styrofoam cups, and Styrofoam shell food containers. Why are the residents or travelers doing this? This campaign would help raise awareness directly where those drivers are - in their cars on the road!
This is a cause close to my heart. We just started a campaign in our town of Holden to cleanup litter and beautify our town with plants and flowers. It is so important to take care of our Earth and keep it beautiful!!
Hello 👋🏻 I signed this petition because I've seen constant litter on or near highways & when there's high winds that can land on waters & cause more issues. We are dealing with effects of climate change & with trash that's mostly clothes or plastic containers its time MA takes serious action including enforcing littering fines on highways & make commercials about the effects of littering
I signed this petition because it is disheartening to see the trash and litter accumulate in our natural world, especially near highways and waterways. Not to mention, the ecological toll that litter has on the environment, especially when it contains plastic. Microplastics have integrated into our water, soil, ecosystem, and even our own bodies.
For too long has our society been playing defense against litter and pollution. It is not enough for volunteers to clean up litter after the fact. While the cleanup effort is just as important in helping eliminate litter, it is time for an offensive strategy to instill preventative measures, such as those outlined in this petition.
