I was part of the group of parents who worked together to remove Austin's predecessor Dr. McGee due to all of the cases of sexual assault at the high schools. The Board managed to pick a replacement that was worse in the most important ways. So, while we move towards better leadership that our families deserve, let's also ensure that the School Board is comprised of individuals who will hire a new Superintendent with integrity and courage. Our families deserve a Superintendent who will recognize the strength of our community, and who will consider families in making decisions. The new leader should choose collaboration and consideration over authoritarian rule. The new leader should make difficult choices because they are the right thing to do, rather than conceding to irrationality and fear mongering. Imagine if PAUSD would have had a leader brave enough to navigate our children through the pandemic without depriving them of 1.5 years of academic and social-emotional education. Our kids deserve someone principled with creativity and courage.

As a long time PAUSD parent with four children graduated from Paly, I am truly saddened by the divisions that mirror our national discourse. We have always been a community of diverse voices, but Don and the current school Board have created an environment in which dissenting voices are silenced for fear of retribution. Instead of bringing parents, teachers, and staff together for the betterment of our students, Don and the Board have allowed the worst of us to propagate. As someone who has spent many years supporting our community, I'm truly saddened by this.

I am 30-year veteran employee of PAUSD inside the Print Shop. Until the last year and a half, I had never witnessed what can only be described as an exodus of PAUSD employees through: buyouts, “early” retirements, employee reductions, terminations, and resignations. My personal story of why I signed the petition is because of the discrimination, harassment and retaliation I received from Carolyn Chow, the former CBO of PAUSD. Only myself and select others within the corporate yard were discriminated against because we were forced to sign a daily "sign in sheet" or face disciplinary action. I spoke directly to Carolyn stating full time employees do not sign time cards and if she wanted to continue to implement it, that it would need to be negotiated with our CSEA union and EVERYONE would need to sign in as well. Shortly after that, my supervisor agreed upon work hours were shifted slightly while others were allowed to work those hours. I commute 3.5 total hours per day, so the half hour earlier start made a huge difference. Also, my supervisor was harassed by Carolyn to write me up for insubordination. Things got so bad, I even applied to be a police officer. If my Pellet B test score was slightly higher, I potentially could've been a police officer by now instead of a PAUSD employee. As I stuck it out, my supervisor decided to retire and Carolyn proceeded to close out his position, ensuring I had no chance of promotion. The new person hired in place of my old supervisor, is a manager position that did not fill the workload void of a working supervisor. When I fought for working out of class pay, Carolyn and my new boss fought me all the way. After I was finally rewarded with the extra pay, I then proceeded to file for permanent reclassification to paid appropriately for all the extra workload I took on since my former supervisor’s retirement. Approximately 2 weeks after I did that, I was told by Carolyn that PAUSD decided to cut half of my work hours and my co-worker's hours as well for “lack of work”. After a little digging, I came to find out that PAUSD had spent $500,000 over the previous 5 -year period on outside while trying to cut my position in half. After CSEA filed a cease and desist, Don Austin pulled the action item from the board packet. The following board meeting, they decided that I could keep my 8 hours but pivoted to try and eliminate 100% of my coworker's position – meaning I would be doing all the work that 3 people used to do just a few months ago. After some diplomacy between our CSEA union and Don Austin, my coworker's job was ultimately saved too. The treatment I received from Carolyn Chow was completely unprofessional and maybe even illegal. I have also signed the petition because as she was leaving, PAUSD hired a former colleague of hers from San Mateo Foster City School District, Mark Herrera. Please see youtube link for public record complaints made to the board regarding his behavior several months before he was hired by PAUSD! Although Carolyn is gone, Mark has picked up where he left off from his old school district and PAUSD has even promoted him while downplaying incidents involving his behavior, a police report and a very recent formal complaint for accusing a 25 year employee of stealing and searching his car without any evidence of wrong doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeEePMKlEWs Time stamp of employee complaints and accusations are as follows: #1 - 8:13, 21 year employee #2 - 9:14, 9 year employee #3 - 10:38, 20 year employee #4 - 13:26, 10 year employee #5 - 15:13, unknown years #6 - 19:18 , 26 year employee #7 - 21:26, 10 year employee #8 - 43:01, CSEA chapter President
