as someone with locs finding helmets that fit my head & are comfortable enough to wear all day is a big challenge. as a professional in the outdoor industry, i’ve had multiple peers ask me for helmet recommendations in order to support more inclusive programming - it’s so disappointing not be able to come up with any solid recommendations for helmets that fit & function well for people who rock local, afros, braids, etc!

Christine supported: Outdoors helmet makers: Design helmets for all heads!I work as the Climbing Program Coordinator for a nonprofit that gets youth from all backgrounds outside and guides them in climbing around the Truckee/Lake Tahoe Area. I have been trying for 2 years to make our gear more inclusive and friendly to all the youth that come to us. Where I have been pretty successful in finding appropriate harnesses, I have been SO frustrated by the lack of options for helmets that allow for dreads, braids, protective hairstyles, curls, etc. I want youth to come and feel welcomed and excited to move their bodies in nature, not like they’re coming to do a sport that they are already excluded from. The few helmets I have found that people in online forums said are great, have all been discontinued and many athletes I have talked to with these hairstyles have to use a bike helmet that will not protect them properly.
