I took German class all four years at MNHS with Frau Povliches and still talk about those classes to this day. It was a great experience learning not only the language but also the culture. Retain the course throughout MISD.

My son takes German currently at Boyd and it’s his favorite class! He absolutely loves his teacher. It’s ridiculous in a county this wealthy that we can’t afford German classes. Could have gotten rid of Abbott and his voucher program when we had the chance two years ago but as usual in this state as long as the person has an R behind their name they get elected. Someday I hope people will wake up and stop voting against their best interests!

With open enrollment occurring in 26/27 school year for McKinney High Schools, German would make MISD more attractive to students who otherwise aren’t afforded the opportunity since surrounding districts don’t offer German as a language. It’s a shame that this elective is being cut.

I am currently enrolled in German with Chris Kohler at McKinney Boyd High School. Herr Kohler is the best teacher I have ever had and it would be a waste of his gift of teaching German to get rid of the German courses in high school. The school system isn't using their money wisely and it is causing program cuts due to "budget problems" that can be fixed.

I took German all four years of high school at McKinney North, and that class was hands down the most influential class I took. I, to this day, still take German classes and plan to study abroad, which all came about due to this incredible class. Students should continue to be given the opportunity to learn crucial life skills, especially something as impactful as a second language. Even the German programs that I was able to become apart of - such as the SPARK program - have proven useful to this day in terms of employment and educational opportunities, and I strongly believe other students should continue to be given such a great resource.

My daughter is currently enrolled in Herr Kohler's class and raves about him and his class! Having true options for languages to learn is important for student growth because everybody learns differently.

This disturbing trend of not supporting programs that are providing students with incredible experiences has to stop. It is a problem that starts at the state level and has now trickled down to our districts. Look at the evidence. Chris Kohler and Cynthia Povliches have been a part of MISD for over 15 years. Look at the evidence in the lives of former students and fellow employees that they have changed. I have not met a teacher in my 20 years of education that connected with students the way the Mr. Kohler does with his students. I witnessed hundreds of times how students, who otherwise were ignored or not valued, came to his class because they were welcomed. Read the comments and you will find many that attest to this.

Students sign up to take German, but they stay for Chris Kohler. Although German is a smaller program than Spanish, for instance, the students that he reaches goes beyond any quantitative data. I have taught across the hall from Chris for years and I’m always in awe of the strong connections he makes with each of his students. He doesn’t just teach German, he teaches humans… to expand their minds and to think critically and have compassion for one another.

Hello! My grandpa was born in Germany and I traveled to Germany for soccer. German classes were not an option for me because I was homeschooled. So while I never got the opportunity to take a German class, I really wish I could have. Two of my friends who knew German helped me be familiar with the language so I would be able to navigate Germany. Upon coming back to America, I really wanted to learn more of the language. I know this language is valued by more people than myself. It would be so sad to have more stories like mine, where people do not have the opportunity to learn what they want to. Please keep German classes as an option!

I told my girls to take German in high school because guaranteed there would only be one German teacher and they would be great. Two of my daughters took German at Boyd and found my statement very true. My youngest took French and had an inferior experience. Don’t deprive future students of a bankable great teacher by cutting German.
